It all depends on the skimmer. You should keep it as clean as possible to maintain optimum performance.

I clean mine usually once a week when I do my water changes.

Well, I try to clean the collection cup once a day but sometimes I don't get to it. I clean the skimmer body every few months.

Every day or two. I wipe the neck of the collection cup every day, and empty the cup every other day. The collection cup is only a quarter or so filled, but I still empty it.

I dont know if I understand. I thought a skimmers break in period was to get a layer of the goo in the system and that somehow helps it pull the goo better than a clean one.

that's mostly in the skimmer box. and it's the oils on the new skimmers that pop the bubbles very quickly. the oil is washed off and replaced with a 'slime'. cleaning the riser tube or collection cup won't interfere with performance more than a few hours after cleaning it. after the initial break-in period it only takes a few hours to be back to normal.

but to answer the question, i clean the skimmer when it starts getting hard to see through the collection cup... i don't think a dirty skimmer affects performance, it just looks unsightly.

I clean the neck daily, the cup twice a week, and the pumps bi-monthly. I may bump up the pump cleanings as the skimmer performs best when the pumps are slime free.

I'll have to disagree here. The build up in the riser and the cups cap will severely limit skimmate production.

Why do you think Deltec sells a $1000 sell cleaning head? To regularly clean the cup and riser, this will increase performance up to 20%

I take out the scum from my CSS 125 every second day and clean the entire thing every week. I have it running on a middle-low setting. It's great!
