? RE: dual channel pump for slow water changes

Hi Randy, thanks for speaking today.

I was wondering, you mentioned a dual channel pump in your presentation that could be used for slow constant water changes, what pump were you referring to? was it the
"Aqua-medic reef doser twin" or another pump?

Thanks
jk

I use a 30 gallon per day, dual head Reef filler pump:

It pumps water into my sump from my saltwater reservoir at 30 gpd, and at the same time, removes 30 gpd from my tank and sends it to a drain. So it is an automatic water change, and is slow enough that I don't bother to heat or adjust the new salt water at all.

Your doing 30gpd in waterchanges! That must get really expensive.

Its a good idea to have a refrence sample for alk test kits. 1.1350 grams of baking soda in 1gallon of distilled water=10dkh. Check your alkalinity test kit!

Do you put it on a timer so that you don't deplete the replacement water but yet continue to pump out the tank?

Sounds like a pretty good plan. I'm guessing that the flow into the sump and the suction are at opposite ends to help prevent from drawing out the new water?

I just plug it in for a while, then unplug it. A timer would be a better fail-safe for my forgetfulness.

I actually draw from the sump andadd to a refugium that is distant from it.

Thats agood idea. I used to do a fw drip on my freshwater tanks, and i never had to do manual waterchanges. This is pretty close, I like it.
