Ushio 10K 250 SE break-in

Just got a new Ushio 10 K 250 watt SE bulb running on an icecap ballast

How long is the burn-in?

Seems very yellow ... (even with 2 x 96 watt PC actinics)

Thanks

Will

About 100 hours. But from what Ive read, that bulb is gonna keep a yellow tint even after break in. I've herad everything from very yellow to white with a yellow tint. Never used that bulb myself though.

make sure the nipples on the bulb are somewhere above the 3 and 9 o'clock position. They should not be pointing down. I would try pointing them straight up at first and then rotate between 3 and 9 to find the best color. The orientation of the nipple on SE bulbs can greatly effect color and output.

the inner envelope of the bulb has a raised glass spot (nipple)

also... cooling fans shouldnt be pointed at the bulbs... cool the water, not the bulb... cooling the bulb will change the colors

Is this personal experience or has there been any study done on this. I've heard this mentioned on this site many times and would love to see some comparison pictures or testing data.

harker did some a few years ago... but it really comes down to the bulb itself... different bulbs run better in different nipple orientations.

DE bulbs make this easy.. the nipple can only go one way

I spoke with the Ushio rep at MACNA as I just went MH with 14k SE Ushios. He said as long as the nipple is horizontal or better (9-3 positions) you are fine. No difference in output or color as long as long as that is met.

the ballast you use also can make a quite a bit of difference in color. magnetic ballasts tend to run bulbs more yellow then electronics typically.

I used in in DE and it was yellow also.

The Aquaconnect 14K in SE has just as much Par as that Ushio 10K. I have heard this bulb is pretty much the SE version of the Phoenix 14K DE.

Heard the XM 10K is super bright and has a ton of par. just dont know if it is yellow also

I tried to reposition the nipple to the 12 o'clock position

Still looks yellow - waiting for the burn-in

Right now I changed the time so it is on while I am at work

The XM10K is great for growth but does have a yellow tint, not the worst and after burn in its pretty nice. I planned on growing my frags out with the 10k then switching to 20k's once the corals are grown out.
