Seaclone Skimmer or Prizm Red Sea Skimmer?

hey,
I am getting started with a 55 gallon tank and I am getting to the point where I can afford a moderate skimmer. I am looking at the prizm red sea or the seaclone they are both about the same price? what do we all think of these two products?

Welcome to Reef Central!

I'd say save your money on either of them. The general consensus is that neither of the skimmers you mentioned are great performers. Do you have to have a hang-on or will you be able to use an in-sump skimmer?

If you have to have a hang-on, look at the Aqua-C Remora. If you can handle an in-sump, look at the ASM G-series. I just bought a G3 and it's kicking tail on my 55. You might also want to check out the Coralife Super Skimmers - people are saying good things about these as well.

I know both of these models are about $100 more expensive than the two you listed, but trust me, it's worth it. I'm a student, too, and I know you're on a budget, but I think you would be better off waiting until you can afford a "real"skimmer. I know it was one of the best things I ever did for my tank.

Oh, and there might be some threads over in the "New to the Hobby" forum that will guide you in choosing a skimmer.

Hope this helps!

is there any other filtration on the tank? a wet/dry, trickle filter, anything like that? just live rock probably can't sustain that kind of bioload.

I've run the prizm and it really won't handle a 55 I know what they say. It would be ok on a 10 or maybe a 20 gallon tank. Save your money and get a better skimmer. What type of filtration do you have?
