This all makes me want to switch to T5s... I think I am going to fit 4 in my hood with my MH... then go from there... great tanks everyone... I hope to have something similar one day... =)

Jester I feel your pain! I have both MH/T5 and was thinking of ditching my MH and going all T5. The pics and growth is amazing.

Probably will hold off and go with the ATI PM on my next build.

Just curious if the fixtures are suspended from the ceiling or canopy structure how easy they are to move to access your tank?

Thats interesting the wattage and intensity from the pictures doesn't seem very good but the corals color seem very vivid.

Does that mean 400W of T-5 is just as good as 400W MH?

My English is not good use the translator, I do not know if I understood the question.
The powermodule is 15cm of water and hung from the ceiling with steel wires, the height of the lamp is adjustable.
For maintenance of corals should raise it with a few cm you can not get good access.

The growth with this powermodule is like hqi from 250w but the color of corals with the form T5 is excellent.

The intensity seems less because a t-5 with individual reflectors is more efficient than most halide reflectors. They are very directional and put a lot of light straight down. Take a look at most tanks with halides, they throw the light everywhere. Because of this they seem brighter because more light is hitting your eyes and the glass and the walls (this is wasted light). The luminarc is a very good reflector though. Usually you can go with less watts to achieve the same par. Halides have a hot spot right under the lamp. You have to look more at overall par. Right under a halide is a lot of light but off to the sides less. T-5 is more uniform and it also will light more sides of the coral. But you have to look at the tank to determine what is better and reflectors make a huge difference in both t-5 and halide. Both are good lighting options.

I by no means can afford a new fixture, so will replacing all 4 bulbs w/40watt bulbs benifit my corals? The new bulbs will be 2-12k actinic white & 2 super actinic.
I would try to fit, the IceCap SLR's in there with some new bulbs and your fixture will be far more superior than with that one reflector it has now, tust me it makes a huge difference. There is a thread on here somewhere that explains how to put SLR's into your Nova Fixtre. I wanted to do it to my old Tek fixture but come to find out the one that you can replace the reflector on is the nova. Good luck.

that would be sweet. t-5's seem like they would be pretty easy to retrofit

Do you guys recommend T-5 for a 48" tank?
The fixture I think 54Wx8 is around $500

I just received a MD mailer catalog (10th year anniv addition) and there was a full page add towards the back for a new Nova Extreme t5 pro 72" 12x39w unit. Here's the direct link from current usa http://www.current-usa.com/nova_extreme_pro. Was thinking of this unit or the 2 x 36" ATI power mods.

yea the teklights are pretty sweet setups... they dont put as much par as one with individual reflectors like the SLS or SLR but it still puts out a decent amount for the money, on a deeper tank i would go with aquactinics(it has icecap SLR) as it will help put more lighting down into the tank. if the tank is not so deep the teklight will work great

The best and cheapest route is just getting a retro kit, IceCap SLR retro kit

its not really individual though its one large reflector that is bent up like single reflectors, unless they now have a new t5 hood with actual individual reflectors that i dont know about?

special reef go to Reefgeek.com they have all the reflector, and bulb needs as well as ballast... and entire retro kits.

i recently went from a 46bow to a 90 so i am still filling it up. i have had only t-5 on both the 46 ran 4 36 bulbs now the 90 is on 8 4 foot bulbs in 2 different fixtures. i need to replace some bulbs this week right now i have 4 10k and 4 atinics. i like the look of the tank when all the atinics are on with 2 10k (the lights cycle on and off) so i am thinking of changing some of the 10k to 12k we will see how it works out....

Now this is the type of thread stores need to print out and plaster right next to the T5 units. I keep hearing the same old "you can't grow SPS except under MH's" statement all the time.

Anyways you people keep some beautiful tanks. I love them all.
