Trying to identify something that's starting to grow
Hello,
I'm very new to the reeftank hobby! I'm trying to figure out what is growing in my tank. I know that I have hare algae growing. (I already have a sea hare working on that problem) There are these new little neon-green tube looking "things" growing out of one of my rocks (through the hare algae). They are always in the same place. I'm attaching a photo. Just wondering if anyone can identify this for me? I would really appreciate everyone's advise! ~Thank you~[IMG][/IMG] Last edited by Jdelima; 11/30/2007 at 10:30 PM. |

I don't know what posting parameters means.
You are correct. My tank has been taken over by hare algae. It's a 55 gallon reef tank that my brother gave me because he wasn't taking care of it anymore. I'm definately learning as I go. I bought a sea hare to help clean it up and I've also been picking away at the pieces I can grab at. |

do u have any test kits?
the parameters are the result of the following testes a basic parameter includes the following ph, ammonia, nitrate, nitrate, alkalinity, Salinity, and temp how long has your tank been up and running? u might need more than just a sea hare, maybe some of snails |

My tank has been up for about 5 months. My brother had it for years before. I have been doing 10% water changes at a time. I need to do a bigger waterchange this weekend. Alkaline was high, but everything else was at normal levels. I just added the sea hare a week ago. Other than my hare algae problem, everything else seems to be good. My tigertail sea cucumber split in half a few weeks ago & now I have 2. It was cool to see!
What type of snails help with hare algae? |

The neon green things you are seeing are a type of calcium based algae, they don't seem to cause any issues. Don't grow all that fast, and you can remove them if you want.

That is Bubble Algae my friend. Keep it at your own risk. I HATE that stuff.
An emerald crab eats it right up

I'm pretty sure thats Neomeris annulata... which is harmless... and probably will end up dying off anyways

I have an emerald crab.
I'm going to do a waterchange this weekend. (I'm in the process of making the r/o water now.) We'll see if that helps. Thanks for your help. |
