To Drill or not to Drill

I have always used acrylic tanks and they were easy to drill. I will be setting up a new 70 gal glass tank. Im tired of the scratches on acrylic and the coralline alage is impossible to remove.

So im going to need to drill the tank or use an overflow box. i havent used and overflow box in 10 years. I want one that will not fail. Are there any fail proof overflow boxes or should I plan on drilling the tank?

I had the same thread. It was a landslide to drill. There was a lot of people with top quality over flow boxes that sad they wish they had drilled. As far as drilling goes I have not done it yet. Seems like way more of a scare than it actually is. Most people on here just buy a cheap 5 dollar or so bit from the most popular auction place.

Drill. Drill. Drill. Had the most popular (lifereef) siphon overflow for about 6 months and it almost flooded twice. I barely caught it both times. The carpet in my family room thanks me.

I just drilled 4 holes in the back of my 75. I've always used siphon overflows and I'm excited to finally get away from them.

Here's a link to what I've done so far:
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...readid=1233593

This was my first attempt at drilling and I didn't even try a practice hole. There were some chips, but they were all on the exterior of the tank so everything should be ok.

Bulkheads, a diamond hole saw , and a piece of glass is cheaper than a siphon overflow ... and much safer.

Air just accumulates in the U-tube over time. That and since the tube is clear algea can grow in there too and cause resistance.

Air should never accumulate in the U Tube. If it does, you need to increase your flow a little.

If the tank is not setup, you should drill it. Its not that hard. Adding a siphon overflow is more for a tank that is up and running that you dont want to tear down to drill.

Drill it! Its easy as long as you are patient while drilling.

I used my 12V drill and a diamond hole saw bit and basically let the weight of the drill slowly eat away through the glass. The most critical point, IMO, is to not chip the glass too badly when the hole is almost all of the way through the pane.

No practice hole here either
