to move a 10 gallon tank could i just take out 5 gallons of water, move the tank and stand, and set it up at my new house without any problems?

I've done just that with moves in the past. Look at it this way, if you replace the water that was removed with freshly mixed salt water (making sure the parameters match your tanks water), you'll be doing a 50% water change

I wouldn't try it, that sounds like too much weight left in the tank, sloshing around back and forth.

I would take out all the rocks and livestock, at least 8 gallons of water, leave the sand, and go. its not that much extra work, but I think its a lot safer

yea you can do it like griss said but what i would do is get a bucket with a lid and put the fish coralsand snails and hermits into it with the water from the tank and leave half the water or less if you want with the sand and rock in the tank then move it set it up and you can either put fresh new salt water in or even just put back in the water the you took out.. ooo and make sure that there some holes in the lid on the bucket

cool, thanks. I think i will just put the stuff in buckets, better safe than sorry. I basicly just wanted to make sure i wasnt going start a cycle by taking out too much water.

Try moving a 200 gallon tank sometime

Actually, that move worked out well. The seller of the house we were buying let me in a week before closing. I set up a 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tank in the basement, filled it with RO/DI, added heater and powerheads and then mixed in Salt. I made sure the water parameters in the stock tank matched my 200 to a T. On moving day, we just put everything in buckets and moved it into the stock tank. Like you, we only moved about 5 minutes from the old house.

wow... better you than me. and to think i was worried about moving a 10 gallon. I am glad i waited to setup the 72 gallon until after we moved.

Though if i ever have to move that tank, i think i will use your idea.
