aeroation

I was wondering If putting an air pump in my 20 gallon rather than having using the power heads to circulate air will work.

It will work, but you will be dealing with a lot of salt creep and the spray from popping bubbles starts collecting. A power head will be a much better option.

Powerheads provide a two fold benefit of aeration and water flow around your tank.

there should be no need for an air stone if your system has proper flow and flow direction. However, keep in mind that if you do decide to introduce air bubbles to your system - some corals can be harmed if they are constantly being exposed/hit/touched/whatever by airbubbles from the flow blowing them around the tank
