&$^# Mantis Shrimp
I suspect I have a mantis. Although I only heard it twice, a few weeks ago heard the infamous popping sound. Since, a perfectly healthy hawkfish and 6-line wrasse have turned up missing without a trace!
Unfortunately, I suspect its in the back of the tank so I'll have to wait him out as I am not ripping the tank apart. |

we need a mantis support group
traps aren't working for me...someone in another thread said to try pour seltzer in its hole, but that would mean tearing down the tank, and knowing where it is |

Find the exact rock that it loves to hide in ( which require patience, which if your a reefer you would need a lot of ). then once the home is found, pull out the rock, pour the seltzer in the mantis hole. Have the rock hovering on top of the bucket of saltwater, so when the manits jumps out, he can be caputred live.
becaust he could be some value to you. ( can be sold to LFS/or other reefers or traded for frags, fish etc.. )

I tried the seltzer thing, It didnt work for me but I have heard it worked for others. I used 3 liters hehehe.
Also I heard make a hyper salt solution and a low salt solution do a dip in the hyper for 1 -2 mins then the low one... Saves your rock and gets him out. I am waiting to try that one myself.... |

Finding him is going to be my biggest challenge. I have yet to see any signs of him.

We were told that right before we do a water change to take the rock he's in and dunk it into a bucket of freshwater and when the shrimp zooms out to move the rock into the bucket of salt water and swoosh it around to get the freshwater out. Then catch the shrimp bfore he dies and take him to the store for a trade. Then continue with a normal water change.

We got one out of our tank in about an hour of first spotting it. I guess we got lucky. I just happened to see it dart out of its hole. We kept chasing it out of its hole until it went into a smaller piece of rock, we then pulled the rock out of the tank and the little bugger came squirming out.
