Did I make a mistake? (Red Coris Wrasse )
I just bought this fish at the lfs before doing my research. Now I read it will eat inverts, flip over corals, and burrow all over the tank disturbing the live rock. I'm putting it in quarantine and may try to return it.
Am I over reacting or can this fish be considered reef safe...

Beautiful fish...but not safe
From experience, I bought one of these and housed it in a 120 gal reef system for two years. It never made the color change, and I finally had to tear the system down and at that time it went to the LFS.
While in the tank it killed shrimps, hermits, and decimated the pod population. Forget about worms etc. It is a beautiful fish, not sure what size the tank is, but I will tell you that after about 3 months I tried and tried and tried to catch this little guy. but was never able to do it with traps or otherwise. Even when tearing the tank down it was the last to be captured after I removed the sand bed. Hope that helps.... Chris |

Thanks for your reply. I am now acclimating it for the 10 gal quarantine tank. The only problem with that is it has a crushed coral substrate which I understand the Coris can't tolerate. I can only hope it makes it 'till I can resolve this. had planed on putting it in the 75 display but will not do so now. I just wish the lfs had told me this...oh well, buyer beware!

Well, as I said it is a pretty fish. If you don't mind replacing snails, hermit crabs, and knowing that pretty much anything that comes in on your live rocks is lunch, it will be okay. I could not see that it every messed with my corals.
FYI, it took be about 1 week to know i had made a mistake that in the long run was going to be a problem. It would be great in an aggressive fish only w/live rock tank.... Take care, Chris |

mine is a model citizen other than flipping over frags. everything in the tank must be secure. he doesnt bother crabs or snails. pods YES! But thats why I got him. The pods were eating my zoa's. He does burry himself at night or when he gets scared. I absolutely love mine!

All coral has to be secure. no frags just sitting on the rocks or sand.
My wrass is still a juvi red with whit stripes. no shrimp just snails and hermits.

I have a red corris and it's been very reef safe. It eats anything I put in the tank, is non-agressive, and hasn't eaten any snails, shrimp, or hermit crabs... that I've noticed.
Mine is an adult and has been in my tank for about 6 mths. The only problem I had was that you didn't see it for the first 3 months... very timid fish. Now, he is out all the time and I'm very happy with him. |

I had the same reaction. Whatever you do, don't put him in that crushed coral. They absolutely have to bury themselves in the sand. Wrasses are pest resistent, so I would just take the chance and put him in your main tank.
From my experience, you should be ok. It's just my experience, but I know the fish won't handle the QT tank with no place to hide. You'll either have to return it to the lfs or drop in your display. |
