Carbon and phosphates
I've been trying to control phosphates in my tank to get them as low as possible, and I've been looking at all sources. I change carbon every 3-4 weeks, and last time I did I saw a spike in phosphates. This time before changing I soaked them in RO/DI water.
I checked phosphates of the water after a 24 hour soak...and it was at 0.50. After 6 changes of the carbon RO/DI water, it's only down to 0.28. There has to be a good way to control the phosphates associated with carbon in a tank. The carbon is good quality, so I don't think this is unusual. I was surprised at how much phosphate new carbon introduces. Anyone have a good way of controlling the phosphates introduced by carbon changes? Arthur

Are you using research grade super activated carbon?

Do some research on this board regarding phosphate control. Carbon will not do anything to lower your phosphate levels and in fact cheap carbon can actually leach phosphate into the water. Try a phosphate removal media and cut back on feeding. Controlling phosphates can be a challenge - you just have to be persistent and try to eliminate possible sources one at a time.

boobookitty - reread your post, sorry I did not answer the question you were asking about. I quit using activate carbon for the very reason you describe. I have not ran it for many many years. I put it in because some people recommended it but honestly I never saw any benefit to it. If you feel you need it spend money on a good quality from a marine aquarium supplier. Yes soaking it can leach out some phosphate but if you have any measureable phosphate leaching from the carbon I would not put it in the tank.

No worries. I have to use carbon (using zeovit). I use a no-name brand, and didn't think it would cause this issue. Has anyone tested major brands out there for leached phosphates?
