South Padre, TX snorkeling?
I'm heading to South Padre next week for spring break. I know there are some dive sites around there, but what about just snorkeling? Are there places immediately offshore that we wouldn't have to take a tour to get to?
I've found a couple trips for around $30 a person, but I'd rather do that as a last resort. Thanks in advance.

Forget snorkeling...go SCUBA. When I got my SCUBA certs I also did snorkeling. It's so much better to go dive....though I do have all my stuff to snorkel still.

I'd love to, but I don't have that kind of cash. Just not an option.

Buckeye, not trying to ruin anything for you, but what do you plan on seeing, all we have out there is oil rigs!

You should try to get hooked up to dive the Liberty Ships artificial reefs, located off the Port Mansfield ship channel. There is a really inexpensive dive charter out of Port Mansfield but I cant remember the name off the top of my head. You might google it to find out.
The ships were blasted and sunk to create an artificial reef some years ago. There are also several rig sites to dive in close proximity to South Padre. Check out the Texas Tourism website and look for the "Rigs To Reefs" map.

Actually, it's really not that expensive to "dive for a day" with certain places. They give you the basics, run you through a few tests, and then take you out with dive masters. While I don't really advocate them 100%, it's really not a bad way to dive if you can't afford getting your full certs (which set me back $450 for SSI....seems everyone else in the world is PADI though).
Just an option to get you some of the best views around, that's all. I fully understand the cash flow thing though (or lack there-of).

I would not spend a penny to dive there whatsoever. There is nothing to see! If you want to dive go to FL, CA , Fiji, Caribean, or Mexico. Trust me there is NOTHING to see at South Padrea reguardless of what people tell you, I lived there for years!

Well, you would know especially since I've never even been there. I just figured since it was so close to the gulf that maybe there was some decent diving.
So, in this case, I would definitely follow Scuba Oz's advice! Forget diving! Go get some eye-candy on the beach or something....I don't know, don't listen to me....what do you recommend for fun there Scuba Oz? I'm thinking about taking a trip that way either later this year or next year.

Well the beach is okay (unless you have been to real beaches) then you will be disapointed. Downtown Corpus has some nice places to eat on the bay, if you are younger the crowd down at South Padre is okay, bar hopping ect.. Kings Ranch is pretty nice to see, they have a Navy ship you can go thru in Corpus, great fishing sailing ect..
