scrips is a marine bio department in UCSD? well... it is a marine research place basically... they used filtered salt water pulled a mile away from the coast? anwyays, they are funded and offer free water to the public. many private companies and public people go there to pick up salt water. alot of aquarium people go there. if you have a reef you need to measure the water cause the calcium and stuff might be off alittle? especially cause they are at different temps, compared to a real reef. generally easy to get to.
it is kinda fun to go there to get water and also talk to people you meet on occasion. i have been there once. went alittle crazy and brought back 400 something gallons! all to set a new tank and stuff. depending on your needs... it could be cheaper to just go and get some. i think i calculated at 35 cents a gallon my cost to bring it back? i forget... |

So do the folks at Scripps frown on people rolling up with very large water tanks for personal use? What about for commercial use?
Also, what is their output? How long would it take to fill a 100gal tank? |

for large amounts of water you are suppose to call first the number is located at the source . other than that nobody cares it is funded by california tax payers . i use the 2 inch line to fill about 160 gallons in about 5 minutes but you have to make a fitting to be able to use that . there is a garden hose that takes longer but has good pressure .just make sure you roll the hose up when you are done .

what is the address?
i have been going to UCSB from LA. they only have a 1/2" garden hose that is rather slow. it is a little farther but 2" vs 1/2" might be worth the extra drive. what do you mean connect to the 2" with a special fitting? Carl |

well its a 2 " threaded nipple that you need to make a fitting to thread onto it . i used a 2 " female threaded coupler fitting that i reduced down to 1 1/2 inch and then using a hose clamp i attached pool backwash hose

Andy from "Ocean in Motion" provided Scripps water to RAP and will for MAX too. He's a good guy to deal with. I know he does commercial deiveries, not sure if he does residential too. In any case he hauls Scripps water daily so may be worth checking into.
