I'd say the consensus on powerheads is to go with Maxijet, particularly the 1200s. They are relatively inexpensive and are reliable and move lots of water around. Just point it to the surface.

There are alot of options but for a 55gal I would look at moving atleast 550gph. I would try something in the 900-1000gph range.

The cheapest would be 2 X MJ 900 w/ mj mods. Or 2 of the SEIO 620 Super Flow Pump. I say 2 pumps that way you can get an even flow all around.

Tunze Nanostreams get my vote. I would aim for at least 20x flow, imo. More preferably.

IMHO, even in an FOWLR, I would try to get as much flow as possible. Keeping waste and other detritus in suspension, from using high flow, will allow your skimmer to remove it more efficiently.

I like the Tunze pumps the best because of the amount flow they produce but I have also used the Maxijet and Marineland Penguin Powerheads but in larger quantities.

When I had my 55g FOWLR, I used four Marineland powerheads and I still would have liked more flow. Even though I didn't have the tank heavily stocked, the fish that kept produced a lot of waste and much of it settled on the bottom and never made its way into the skimmer.

This is the first time I have seen the Hydor rotating head so I can't comment on how it works.
