Converting RSM to Seahorse tank?
I was just wondering if it was possible. Are there powerheads i can replace the old ones with?
I want to do something like this- Reefvideos.com (Clip labeled "Seahorse") I would like to do the rics, and some sps. I have some onyx at the LFS on hold for me-They would go in there along with a mandarin and 2 yellow clown gobies. Would this work? Stock list is flexible. |

Mandarins don't belong in nano's.
Clown Gobys lay eggs on some SPS and can cause tissue recession or death to the coral. SPS corals need high light (which you kinda don't have), high flow (which seahorses can't have) and great water (which you won't have due to the number of feedings seahorses need). Some corals could sting and kill the seahorses. Getting the Onyx from Rods? I got mine from him, awesome coloration. |

Mandarin eats frozen-also on hold
Just did research-No SPS for me Just want rics and zoas. You can't do frogspawn or bubble coral can you? I am not attached. I have a boicube reef. Nope I am getting the onyx from another breeder. They are mis bars too. I'll post pics in the clownfish forum when I get them. Soon. Just put some amequel in to take care of the .25 of ammonia. |

"Just put some amequel in to take care of the .25 of ammonia."
if there is ANY ammonia in the tank, it is either overstocked, or cycling. you cant control a cycle w/ amquel, which is a bad product to begin with, you need to wait for the cycle to be done. LPS cant go in with SH as it will sting them. I hope you have a way to keep the temp under 74F for the seahorses. what kind are you getting? this is a very haphazard plan, what size is the tank? I would do a pair of sea horses in nothing smaller then a 37g, maybe add a small fish of some sort, but they do create a lot of waste, and need special care, as in low temp tanks, even for tropicals, and a tank dedicated to them. I would say bets bet is to not include other fish unless the tank is big (55g+) and you dont mind a lot of maintnence. what are you using for a hithch ect... got some major research to do. |

Tank is still cycling. So i will have to wait. I have done extensive research on seahorses and used to be a part of seahorse.org
I thought LPs wouldn't be safe but wasn't sure. I totally forgot about the chiller. I will look right now. What kind of powerheads could I put in there to adjust the flow? |

Would one of these work? Preferably one under $100.

Maybe put a hydor flo (Found at Marine Depot & Dr. Foster & Smith) on the stock outlet and put a small powerhead in the tank with another hydor flo on it to break up the flow.
Question about zoa's, they sting. I had a Clarki Clown that would rub up against them and had black spots on his stomach from it. Not sure if they are potent enough to damage seahorses but I'd ask around. |

No, the ICA's will only drop it a couple of degree's.
I used to have one in my nano. |

What about the aquapod ones- I could get two of those if it would work.

i was also thinking of doing a seehorse tank like marte has on reefvideos. I was planning to put two hydor flos on te on outputs cover the floor with ricodeas and have some macro algea on the bback wall. Have two onxy clowns already and a spotted madrin that loves byrne shrimp. I would do any sps or lps in the tank as it would just make things complicated

I will only do ricordias then.
I don't have a thermometer so i'll pick one up today. |

I'm suprised I haven't been asked to change it
Don't rule out zoa's on my account, I just know they stung the clown. Maybe Palythoa's or Button Polyps (Protopalythoa's) don't sting. Ask around on seahorse.org or the pony forum here and see if others have luck with zoa's in their tanks. I would love to do a seahorse tank but the temp problem is what's holding me back. Not a fan of getting a chiller and all that. Hope you get it up and going. |

I don't want to take the risk with zoas.
The hydor flo things look good. Are the good for a seahorse(SH) tank? Heres some pics of the tank- I was thinking caulpera forests here here and here |

Also Could I put my alveopora in there? And an anemone would sting the SH's right?

The tank runs at 82 during the day and 80 at night. I will turn off my heater tomorrow and watch it.
P.S. I will get the riedi seahorses. |

Looks like you're off to a good start...but I'd move the rockwork far enough away from the glass sides so that you can clean it with a magfloat...esp. since you're located so close to the window...I have a couple of spots of 'green glass' I can't get to easily and they're driving me batty!
Enjoy your tank...I luv mine!
