I also have a 29 gallon and i had HA too. I dont use RO/DI water (yet) and I still got rid of it. My nitrates were 5 ppm when I had HA. The HA appeared abut a week after getting my CSS 65 (Im not saying that it had anything to do with the skimmer, just telling you that I have a skimmer). Now, How I got rid of it was first I went to the LFS and got 2 black mollies, acclimated them for about 6-7 hours on a slow drip. After about a week, my HA was disaperaing, but slowly. So, I went back to the LFS and got 5 astrea snails and an Emerald Crab, and a bag of carbon. The Hair algae still wasnt disappearing as fast as I wanted it to. So I covered my tank for about a week, so the HA wouldnt be able to photosynthesize. I peeked into my tank a few times and the Emerald crab was eating the HA alot, so I was happy. After a week of having the tank covered, I took the cover off and there was only a small patch of HA on my rock and it was small enough for my snails to eat. So I picked my snails off the walls and put all of them around the patch. Within a day it was all gone, and my tank has been HA free for about 2 weeks.
