Best small(er) Calcium Reactor for Nano-sized tanks?

I don't know of any...all of them seem fairly expensive and made for larger tanks.

Opinions/suggestions...make/model...cost...weblink for each?

Thanks in advance! - Matt

Why would you need a calcium reactor for a nano?

IMO a 2 part system would be a lot easier and a lot less expensive. But even this is not really needed

Regular water changes on a weekly basis will actually take care of most of the mineral depletion

A calcium reactor on a nano tank, one small miss step and you could really do some damage with a pH spike, thats
unless your going to have a nano with a huge fuge/sump.

Could be done, but not really needed

The best small calc reactor I have seen was a DIY using a DI housing. If I ever get a controler, I will build one. Small and easy. I'll look for the link if you are interested.

maxalmon has some good points, but here is a very reasonably priced unit designed for systems 10 to 75 gallons:

Ca>480ppm, I'm bringing it down
dKH=9, ok
PO4=0ppm, ideal

1/06/08 after a water change
Ca= 480ppm, still a little high
pH= 8.2, I'd like it at 8.3
NO3= 10ppm, acceptable

I would second that. I have one on my 40g cube that he built also. His products are top of the line!

This depends on what you are keeping. My tank uses 50 mg/L CA per day and that's without any clams. The problem with heavy 2 part dosing in a nano tank is you can also have a chloride buildup and salinity issues so weekly water changes are very important. It is the easiest solution though.

Does it need to go into a sump -- I don't have one in my nano -- 26gal (100 litre).

I am tired on daily aditions of 2 part -- twice daily in fact, going away for a few days causes the calc to drop to around 350 from the usual 420. Alk, mag & ph are always fine though.

This is why I feel a nano re-actor is the way to go.
Opinions?

This reactor does not go in the sump. You just have a small MJ that pumps water to the reactor and then it is pushed back. This little reactor is very easy to hide.

Give Scott a call. He will get it all explained to you.

cherubfish pair (or anyone) -
For $50, this 'ViaAqua Acro-Cal Calcium Reactor' looks inexpensive for sure, but has anyone used it and can speak first hand to how well it works, etc?
Thanks in advance!

conorwynne -

Yes, I feel the same way and when I am away on business, etc I would like to not worry about the manual daily kinds of things. If I can help automate some of the basics of my tank (not full auto-pilot) I would like to do that. Keeping a reasonable budget in my entire setup is another factor...that's the only reason at this time I wouldn't be interested in the reactor in the above link by Aquatic Systems Design. Again though, looks like quality craftsmanship, etc and a great unit. i was trying to keep reactor to about $100 or less.

Thanks for the continued posts on this topic folks. I don't know alot about nano calc reactors. - Matt

Does that ASD reactor come with the CO2 system? It shows it in the one picture, but I would guess that it is not included? That is at least another $100-$150 added onto the unit if it isn't included.

i am also looking for a modestly priced calcium supplement system for my 15 gal nano and just wanted to suggest that someone who is good with their hands could take some basic knowledge of reactors and by looking at the aquariumsystemsdesign reactor start a thread in the diy section about how to build a nano reactor. i myself am personally looking into this option because those things can't cost more than 35 bucks to make and aren't exactly rocket science. just a suggestion

Anyone know the answer to the co2? I posted? The MRC reactor doesn't come with the co2 system.

You could do that but it takes quite a bit of time/knowledge and tools to properly maked keyed flanges, etc....

Also, acrylic is very expensive.
