how much flow is ideal?
I am setting up a new tank about 80 gallons, 4 ft wide
the main source of flow will be 2 maxijet with sureflow or gulfstream mod. I did not decide on the propeller yet, I have a choice of 1600 GPH or 2500 GPH. so with 2 pumps, propeller choice 3200GPH / 80 = 40x or 5000GPH / 80 = 62.5x I have run in excess of about 100x total in my smaller tank before but I found the SPS grow very slow with a very dense structure. Has anyone done a healthy SPS reef with about 40x turn around? |

i think you can do it with 40x it all depends on placement, and remember not to have sps corals in low flow areas and i think you will be fine

40x turnover should be fine, but be safe and go 62.5x turnover.
It'll also eliminate some dead spots. I'm currently going 80x turnover, but moving the water around very uniformly thus nothing too dense. direct/constant flow is what really causes corals to become dense rather than spread. |

I run about 50x and the stuff grew great just so long as i kept poison out of the water
