Arrow Do Emerald Crabs Molt??

Hey everyone

I have a quick questions regarding my emerald crab.

I found his legs in my tank and I was wondering if they molt... or if my poor crab has died

any input would be great

Thanks!

well they do molt, I think I had mine either molt or die a month ago. But I haven't seen it since so i think it died. Well if you found the legs was there anything else in the legs or was it empty?

Yes they molt. I still always get fooled into thinking one died.

Yes, they molt. They are often much larger after a molt. Not like a shrimp that is just a little bigger. Emeralds can be much bigger! They also usually molt with no obvious opening where they got out. Shrimp usually have that broken back look to their molts, emeral crabs look perfect.

Mmmm, I've had my emerald since January, and he has still not molted for me
I do feed him nori, since I don't have much algae. He has a weird coloration - I used to think it was coralline algae on his back - it's a pinkish tone? Cute l'ill bugger tho', he always waves and holds out a claw for the nori. He takes it very gently, and has not pinched me yet...

A lakc of molting is usually caused by the lack of certain nutrients like Clacium, Magnesium, and Iodine. Then again they could be full grown already and have no need to molt. Plus there is the possibility that among the large aounts of LR in our tanks we just haven't found the empty shels from them.

Yeah they do molt. When ours molted for the 1st time my wife thought he died. Later that day I saw claws coming out from one of the rocks. Ok "now we're confused" we thought. This might sound a little disgusting but she removed the "dead" crab and thoroughly inspected it. There were no rips or tears or anything so she disected it. Sure enough nothing on the inside. Just thought I'd share that little story with all of you.

I wonder how they get out of the exoskeleton when molting?

Wow... thanks for posting! My emerald just molted for the first time, and I found the exoskeleton and thought he had died... after reading this thread I finally found him hiding under a rock. Thanks for the info!

I have found 2 dead emeralds in my tank. I only had 2.
I still have 2 alive....HUH...

Their molts is very very convincing of a dead crab!
I do notice they turn a grey/whitish when they are getting ready to molt.

Nope, iodine is toxic to them and they sequester it in their exoskeltons. Once it gets to a certain level it stimulates them to molt whether or not they're really ready to be molting.

They make a slit running across the back between the two hind legs and then just slip out.
