HELP!! About to have baby clownfish!
OK, all you experts out there......Please help the amateur.........
I have 2 F. Percula's that I've had for about 2 years. I was told unless I had a half a dozen or more, I would not get a mating pair, which was fine with me. Well, these 2 after a couple of years I guess decided to become a pair! They live in a huge cauliflower colt coral and yesterday, my daughter spotted something on the rock beside the coral that they appeared to be playing in! Low and behold, I have a nest of eggs, already with shinny eyes showing, and when I looked that up..... well, you know what is about to happen!!! I obviously am out of time, so I need SIMPLE help on how I might get the larvae to survive! It is after all the busiest month of the year, so I will not have time to do a bunch of complicated culturing things. I have read that they will hatch within 2 hours after dark, and that I can capture them using a flashlight and a cup, so if I am successful at getting them into the 10 gallon tank I set up last night, what then? Is there any simple way to feed them (something I can buy from the local pet store) and how often must I do that? Also, how do I filter the tank (or aerate it, or whatever!) THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!! |

In a word: no.
Rotifer and phytoplankton cultures are needed to raise these guys in any substantial amount, though you may get some through metamorphosis on brine shrimp alone. Ordering live rotifers every couple of days along with some Instant Alge (or a similar product) is really about the only thing to do at this point. The larval tank should be filled with water from the parent's tank and all sides covered with a dark color. Best of luck to you, but it's going to be a mad scramble and likely none of the larvae will make it anyway. The good news is that clowns will usually spawn pretty consistently, so now would be a good time to start preparing for the next batch. Joyce Wilkerson's book on clownfishes would be an excellent place to begin.

OK, thanks. I have the 10 gallon set up with water from the parent tank now and all the sides covered with black plastic. But, where can I find the live rotifers to feed them??
