Sps prop tank advice

Hi guys,

I'm setting up a small sps prop tank that will be for strictly growing out sps frags on egg crating. I want to achieve the fastest possible growth and best looking color. I'm thinking about using a 20" long glass tank for the growout. What kind of advice can you give me for achieving fast grow rates and great color. How much turnover should I have and what would be the best ballast, pendant and bulb combination to achieve this?

I appreciate your advice

The best thing to do is to hook your growout tank in with your main display. This will help tremendously in maintaining color and health.

you will need to research the bulbs and ballasts more. there are many options here. the lower kelvin bulbs will provide faster growing.

as far as flow goes, i always try to get as much a possible going. at least 30x turn over in a tank for sps.

finally, water quality is of utmost importance.

good luck.

I would recommend that you ensure you have good flow in the tank. As for lighting, if you want quick growth, go for a 6500K bulb, if you want color though, you'll need to look into 14, 15, or 20K bulbs.

Should I go 250 watt or 400 watt 6500k?

Depends on how deep you want your system to be. If your tank is less the 24" I would avoid 400w. Bleaching/burning frags may occur if you do 400w over a shallow system. 250s would probably work out, but again it depends on your tank depth.

I know you said you wanted to do a 20" long tank, so I guess you just have to figure out the depth and width.

Do you know which reflector you may want to go with? The reflector will also play a role in which bulb you should choose.

Agreed. However, I use my 50g grow out tank as a QT as well so it is not connected to my main display. All incoming corals stay in my grow out tank for at least a month. My frag/QT tank is equipped with everything my main display has but for the calcium reactor.
