Cheap water alarm on Woot
woot has a cheap water alarm they're selling today. It's $20 for 2 'leapfrogs', which apparently detect puddles of water 1/32" deep. Here's the link: http://www.woot.com/
I haven't seen nor used them but for $20 I'm getting a pair since at one point had to deal with a flood that costed over $500. Plus, it's actually kinda cute. The only downside is who knows how long they'll last in a saltwater environment. |

bought a set too. Thanks for the head's up. Yeah for $20.00 it's worth checking them out. Anything that will have us from water damage is worth it.

If by cool stuff you mean refurbished garbage no one wants, then I totally agree

I didn't mean nor say all of the stuff is refurbished, if you're offended by what I said, then so be it I apologize, however I've found that woot isn't the bargin basement den of hidden treasures that people always seem to make it out to be.

Okay, received my little froggies, installed the batteries, tested them. They actually are pretty nicely made and for the price I just couldn't help myself.
So the story....... I put one under my tank in the stand (no sump in there, but the overflow drop's in the the stand before going into the garage to the sump). Placed the second on on my stand in the garage with a 24g QT tank on it. Last night I was testing a skimmer with a container and forgot to shut it off (it was really late), well in the middle of the night I started hearing a beeping sound...... Hmmmmm Just out of bed to find that the skimmer overfilled the container and was dripping water on my stand (waterproof) and then onto the garage floor. No damage as that's why I put everything into the garage. LOL I just laughed ad turned the skimmer off. So in closing I think these little things (or some other type of monitor with alarm) is a must have for all of us. Cheer's |

For you DIY folks, you can build one even cheaper & better.
Go to the hardware store and buy a cheap smoke detector. Take it apart and extend the wires going to the test button outside the unit. Mount the smoke detector and run the test button wires to where you want to test for water. Place the wires close enough so that when they get wet, the circut is completed and the alarm goes off. Monitor water and fire in one cheap unit. Merry Christmas.

frogs are cute. Plus the bottoms are sealed so float and keep chirping during high tide. (other alarms drown). I got six so with Woot's flat $5 shipping, each frog to my door was $8.32 each. oh, and did I say they were cute?
