If concerned about lighting during a set-up I would recommend checking out a few stores that have different lighting set-ups in action so you can see how tanks look with the different styles of lighting. You could also check out a few local hobbyists tanks. As noted above, assuming you select an adequate wattage lighting of lighting this will not be the limiting factor in the success of your reef.

Once I saw a hobbyists tank with 20K bulbs I never used 10K again...and definitely run some actinics, even if you only use them for dawn/dusk lighting.

SE for me and I wish these halide company would make up their mind and make one type and use only either SE or DE and stick with it. Its bad enough that we have to worry about pulse start, electronics, coil, and all of the M57,58,80 ect

A friend gave me a Infinity dual 400 watter (still in the unopened box) this weekend which I will set-up this week or next. Just deciding on what to put on both sides of this beast for my 180 sps tank.

I guess I always sort of assumed HQI=DE. I guess that's not right with 400W bulbs...

I've tried them all but my favorite has always been the SE bulbs. It just appears to give off a nicer even color through out the tank in my opinion.

id switch to T5's gives "fuller" growth. and colors are amazing. and you can adjust to any color you want and with the right reflectors and ballast you get enough punch in any kind of tank. =)

I am having the same dilemma with my 150 DE setup. I found some Helios 150 watt DE 20K bulbs from a place called Captain Aquarium and the bulbs are a real nice blue color but they do not carry them anymore and have been searching for weeks to find them else where.
I am thinking of going the T5 route as well next setup I do.
