Will corals grow over coraline?
I've been trying to get some Favia to attach and spread over a particular piece of LR. The Favia has been tightly butted up against the rock for about 5 months but doesn't seem to be making any progress. Does Favia grow that slow or does the coraline repel the Favia somehow?
I have plenty of light, good water flow, dose with DT, provide cyclop-eeze and keep my water levels in check. |

Favia does grow pretty slowly. Coralline does not repel corals in any way ASAIK. In fact some coral larvae will seek out coralline areas to settle on.
Some corals just don't tend to grow onto or attach to rocks, even when in direct contact. I don't have any experience with Favia in that regard however. Allen

My observation is that the advancing edge of the coral somewhat kills the adjacent coralline algae as it encrust.

I've noticed the same thing in my 60 with monti digi. Coraline dies off around the encrusting coral and the coral will take over within a week or so.
