40 gallon breeder input & pics!

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about setting up a 40 gallon breeder for my first reef tank and was wondering how you all felt about that size. The only concern I have about the tank is it being too short for viewing pleasure. The tank is only 16" tall. What I love about this size of tank is that it's so wide for awesome aquascaping possibilities. If anyone has any pics and opinions about this size of tank, it would be great to hear them before I buy. Thanks a lot!!

Sean

Cant wait to see the photos!

perfect for a first reef. 16" tall will allow you to work freely in the tank without getting your armpits wet

I just started reefing and chose a 40 breeder and the view is great but make sure if you want to look from top down turn off pumps (waves distract view). I will try to get pics for you but my camera sucks and is dead.

thats a great size for aquascaping. plus the shallow depth means whatever light you run will be that much closer to the coral. good luck!

I'm planning on my next tank to be a 40BR. I like the height with the 36 length. To my eyes I like a more rectangular view of 16" rather then 20" or 24". And as was mentioned before both maintenance and lighting our somewhat easier with a shallower tank.

To help with viewing, make the stand taller. I have a 40 long that I wanted to be more at eye level when standing. Many stands are better viewed when sitting. The stand I built is 3 1/2 feet tall. It still looks good when sitting, but also looks great when standing. I used the plans from the diy forum. Very easy design and Lowes cut the wood for me. The staining and finishing was the hardest part.

The 40 breeder does give you a lot of options for aquascaping. This pic is with about 60lbs of rock

Yeah idk y it wouldnt show up, I didnt change anything...i think.

I just rearranged my power heads so you can only see 1. I think I am getting a Koralia #2 for xmas, so that should give me better flow.

I am also looking to upgrade my lighting soon to T5s as I only have PC right now.
