The same thing happened to a guy on my local forum, the tang survived. Hope yours does as well.

A friend of mine had a clam close almost completely on a chromis I think it was. Not too sure but it was a much smaller fish than a tang and it was killed pretty quickly. I would think that a tang like this has a much better chance surviving.

I really hope he makes it! Im so sorry to hear this.

so its 7am.. i checked my tang. it is in the same corner all night behind a rock.. but i saw movement so its still alive.. she was a soldier.. i hope she makes it thru.. unbelievable..

the clams defense mechanism is unrealistic.. such strength in calcium for such a small thing. im amazed and hurt simultaenously...

sigh

So sorry, yet so amazed. I had no idea this was possible. I wonder what it could do to a finger?

That's the clam's defensive mechanism from being eaten.

I wouldn't do the finger trick.......I had some aptasia on my clam around the opening and was trying to squirt a small amount of vinegar on it and it closed on the syringe. It almost crushed it. If it was a finger it would be crushed. I had to pull pretty hard just to get the syringe out.

Don't be dumb keep your finger away.

Funny how instead of jumping in to action many of us run for the camera first

I don't think it's funny, I think it's perfect. There's nothing wrong with wanting to capture that moment... not something many of us will ever see.

well no, I rushed to help the tang FIRST.. as I was thinking of ways to help it, i asked my wife to take a pic so I can show other reefers..

i wish i was able to capture it in HD and you guys would have been stunned to see the tang in struggle as it tried to flee..

it is sad, but nature has its ways...

I've got an 8" Squamosa in a clam tank. I need to seriously be careful when working around this guy. The picture was amazing. I am sad for you and wish you the best.

Nothing like a little humor to lighten the mood. Hope the tang pulls through!

Poor clam. That is irony though, the tangs are going about being jerks, nipping at the clams mantle. You reap what you sow is the old saying!
