Thanks gregt, you are very informative! Looks to me that the only real sps corals are different brain corals, a couple different acros, and boulder or mustard hill porites.

Nice pics and video Greg!

FYI, those are not cuttle fish, they are Caribbean reef squid.

It's a common name. I can call it a "beer can with arms" if I want too. LOL

The scientific name is Sepioteuthis sepioidea

Quote:
Check out the fins on the mantle, they wrap all the way around, just like on a cuttlefish. In fact their genus name, Sepioteuthis, pretty much means cuttlefish squid.

They have no cuttlebone, so they cant be cuttlefish - but you can call them whatever you want.

From http://is.dal.ca/~ceph/TCP/Ssepioidea.html
Quote:
Sepioteuthis sepioidea, the Caribbean Reef Squid, is commonly observed in shallow near shore water of the Caribbean by divers and snorkelers. These squid are often confused with cuttlefish because their large fins wrap around their mantels. They are also broader than many squid and these traits make them look like cuttlefish (Sepia). Actually, if you look at their scientific name you will see that scientists also noticed that these guys look like cuttlefish - the "Sepio" which is in the genus and specific name refers to the fact that they look like cuttlefish while the teuthis tells one that they really are a squid. For the record, there are no true cuttlefish (Order Sepiida) off of North America although there are some Sepiolids.

Good info. Thanks. I still think "beer can with arms" is a good name.

Thanks. I've got some longer ones that show the pair swimming together as well. I just haven't had time to get it all uploaded yet...

Cuttlefish is not a common name. It specifically refers to molluscs of the genus Sepia, containing an eight chambered calcified internal shell. European cuttlefish would be a common name.

Sure, you could, but it'd be just as incorrect as calling them cuttlefish.

I was wondering if you could give me any info on where some good places are to snorkle down there. I live about 50 miles N of Tampa and am planning a keys trip fairly soon. I don't have my scuba cert, so I can only snorkle. Do you have any clue about some areas I might could go?

Probably the best snorkles sites would be Pennecamp and Key West.

Greg,
If this is a hijack and we should start another thread let me know!

GM
The cuttles you see on TV are usually Sepia officinalis - they get around 18 inches and have been bred in research facilities for years (although not available for sale to individuals). I am working on Sepia bandensis, as much smaller species (about 3-4 inches) and usually have a dismal survival rate in capitivity. Besides size another difference is the areas of skin that can be raised to make the look like 'plants'.
S bandensis eggs seem to be available in the states right now, but raising the babies is way more expensive than people want to realize - they need to eat live mysids and a whole lot of them!
