Best way to acclimate corals to Metal Halides?
For Christmas I'm upgrading my reef from PC lighting to 250 Watt MH lighting. I've read several different methods to slowly acclimate to corals to the more intense lighting.
1) Window screen method. Start with 4 screens and remove 1 per week. 2) Slowly build up light cycle starting from 1 hour per day and adding 30 minutes per day until full cycle is reached. 3) Move all corals to bottom of tank and use regular cycle (this would be the biggest pain b/c there are a bunch of corals. What is the best/safest way to do it? If there is a different way I'm not mentioning please let me know that too! Thanks and happy holidays everyone! |

When I went from a 150 X 2 to my current 250 X 2 I used two layers of egg crate. Layering them so the patterns did not line up. This made the squares about ¼ X ¼. After a week I took one layer off & the next week the other. I also cut the light down by two hours per day. An hour in the morning & an hour at night gradually brining it back to the regular schedule. You would be amazed at how much egg crate can diffuse the direct light.
