What size ASM G series skimmer should I get?

I have a 50 gallon reef with a 30 gallon sump that I want to keep sps in. I would like to have really clear water but want to avoid spending a fortune if I can. The ASM G series skimmers seem pretty reasonably priced for the good things I hear about them- I just don't have a concept of which one I need- G1, G2, G3...? because I've never had a skimmer before. I know this is a contreversial topic but I would like some opinions because I don't think I should just go by the gallon ratings for the skimmer.

Do you have any space constraints? Is your stand high enough to accomadate a G2? I think if you are going heavy sps then you can't really overskim so go with that one.

G1x, or G2 would be about right for you, If you are running a 30 gal breeder as a sump, then you shouldn't have any dimensional constraints....

I would go with a G3. I've got one on my 55 gallon reef. It's only 20$ more than the G2 and is wonders better.

If you can fit it, bigger is better in skimmers IMO.

Don't skim on your skimmer.
The largest one that will fit. Rmemeber they only need about 1" to take the cup off.

Yep go with the largest one you have room for, I just picked up a G2 to run in tandome with my Euro Reef cs61. I got it on sale from custom aquatics, and now Im kicking myself for not picking up the G3 model....In hindsite I should have paid the extra 50 bucks and went bigger...but I got a pretty good deal on the G2 is was priced less than the G1X so the sale price got me....

G3? For maybe 60 gallons of total water volume? I think that's overkill. That skimmer is what I'm getting for my 150 tank / 40 sump & fuge. It rated for 250 gallons. I think that's beyond overkill but that's JMO.

Well overkill yes, but how often do people upgrade. But for a sps tank there is no such thing as overskimming. he will have about 80 gallons total water volume the G3 will skimm 500 gallons per hour, the g2 350 gallons per hour....my philosophy is one cant skimm enough so the more the better...plus down the road if he wants a larger set up the G3 would be a piece of equipment that could still hold its own.

There's no such thing as overskimming on a SPS tank.

Plus you can adjust a bigger skimmer to skim less but you can't make a smaller skimmer skim more.

Along these lines I have a 120 I'm slowly putting together. A local reefer had an acrylic sump/fuge he built and sold to me at cost (cheap). My problem is that the area the skimmer would go into would just barely fit the footprint of a G-1X. Would absolutely not accomodate a G2 or above. Judging by what I'm reading, and even though the ratings I've seen for the G-1X are "up to 150 gals", am I understanding that I am going to be seriously UNDERskimming by using the G-1X??

Good choice on the G3. Check out yourreef.com for some good prices. Just got my G3 last week from them.

WORD! I use the G-3 on appx. 60g total volume. If I upgrade i won't be needing a new skimmer Plus you get a larger reaction chamber and bigger pump for just slightly more than the smaller models. To me it was a no-brainer hth

I would have never considered a G3 for such a small tank but you guys have some good points there...won't need to upgrade, nothing wrong with overskimming. I guess the only factor for me would be price. So if price is a factor, remember that just because you would be happy with a G3 doesn't mean you would be unhappy with a G1X...

pitstop, I would say that is more than enough but the trend on the thread seems to be bigger is better. I can't say I disagree, if only on one point. If you decide to upgrade to a bigger tank but by your current tanks you already have a 120 so maybe you don't need to upgrade this one.

I just purchased the ASM G-1 for my 37 gallon system...the limiting factor was the clearance inside the cabinet. I'm sure I will not be dissapointed...a G-1 on a 37? No problem!

That's the way I see it PITSTOP. I'm sure you'll be fine. I will be purchasing a G-3 for my 150 tank 40 sump
