I bought my first 3 SPS corals on 3-22-98.
A. yongei Acropora sp. (unidentified) Porites sp. (finger type) I still have them today and have sold many, many frags of them. They were all about 3" when purchased. I now have 2 full colonies each of the Porites and yongei coral. The other acro colony is a slow grower and is about 10" in diameter now. Regards, Kevin

While it's not an acropora, I have a blue ridge coral that I purchased back in 97. Last time I had it out of the tank I tossed it on a scale and it weighed in at around 7 lbs.
Even though the species isn't very pretty, the sheer size of this piece is impressive. I'll try to upload a photo later this evening. -Steve |

I like blue ridge coral. I got a small piece that was growing on the end of an oddly shaped mushroom rock.

Well, it is not an acro, but my oldest SPS is a hydnophora grandis that I bought March 1, 1996. I bought it from Reef Science (now out of business). I still have the invoice.

Alright, let's ressurrect this thread, and please include pictures of your oldest SPS colony. If you can't include a picture, we refuse to believe you still have it.
This is my first SPS, a pink Pocillopora that I bought at MACNA XIV here in Ft Worth from Joy at Harbor Aquatics (now out of business). Purchased September 27, 2002. Here it is, almost 31 months later. It hasn't grown much. 3" x 2" x 2" I guess. Note the tiny feather duster hitchhiker to get a sense of scale.

Marc, that's a gorgeous specimen! One of the nicest Poci's I've seen!
Steve, if you're still around, would love to see some Heliopora (tell me you can frag it, please!) OK, while the colony isn't very old.... Got this from AtlantisAquatics way back on 2/16/01 It's been with me through 3 tanks, and currently has a prime spot in my 230-gallon. Anyone know if Brian is still around? Sorry for the crappy pic, I need to take some new one's! - Mac |

Let's keep this thread going. I know we have a lot of experienced SPS keepers here, and they just have to notice this thread.

Here's a pic of my Vienamensis colony. It measures 21"x21". I've had it for probably 5 years. I purchased it when it measured 9"x9".

First Acropora sp. coral was June '03:
Grew out the frag, moved it around sure seemed to take a while to get going. Once it got going, though ... Here it is last fall before I started my recent fragging [aka shaping for future relocation] ... about 16 months.

Easy... A. Microthalma Got this one at a frag swap about two years ago. It was about an inch tall. Now it is a monster that I have fragged about five times. I also have a big monti cap that is about the same age.

Marc.
Seems like no one was /is interested in ressurecting this thread. Coral I posted was not that old and not that impressive, but it is among my oldest. Really don't understand why no one else cared to post to this ......unless a lot of sps out there is pretty short lived. Does kind of make me wonder. I too would have enjoyed seeing what people have been able to maintain long term. Oh well.

Is there a pic of the colony at an earlier stage? Looks like a truck load of tank space is given over to this colony. Sure is amazing. Any close up shots?

I bet more people will join in. We just have to be patient. Hopefully Weatherson, JB NY, DJ88 and others will post something from their tanks.

I, even though I started this thread, have not contributed. No matter what, my picture taking skills are LOUSY. I have a Youngeii/Turmida that, in my system is now three years old...The frags are now colonies...I also have a Micropthalma, that thing is a weed...started from a one inch frag. Hopefully, others will chime in....

Ricky, post your bad image of your 3 yr old coral.
Mac, go ask Gary to join this thread. Let's get the word out, because I think the results will be interesting. I like the idea of posting the first picture if possible, and then a picture from today.
