Question re: pump

If you bought a pump from someone (who shall remain nameless) who had told you that it was, quote, "in great shape"' but when you turned it up, this much mud fell out of the motor,

would you call it "in great shape"?

Did he say it was cleaned?

Technically the pump could still be perfectly functional.

If it doesnt run well, I would raise hell.

Try it out and see.

But I would be a little ticked off that they did not clean it first.

That's just crap in the cooling fan area and won't hurt the pump a bit. But, that is NASTY and shoul dhave atleast been cleaned up before sending it to you. Funny how some folks are eh?

It looks (but doesn't smell, thank God) like dried skimmate.

Although just out of courtesy I would have cleaned it up before shipping that dirt shall not really hurt the pump. (I have to clean mine every three months of that much accumulated in the fan area and the same for the lighting fans). Try the pump and see how it runs, at least from the picture it seems that it is not corroded and the electrical cable does not seem brittle or cracked which is good as it may show that salt water was not spilled on it and it was not electrically overloaded.

I guess "great shape" means that all the caution stickers are still on the housing!

Some people.........

Out them!

Put some pressure on the person to see if they come up with a partial refund.

I've been having an "email conversation" with him. So far, no good. I have recourse through PayPal, and could flame him here, but I'd rather not.

Unless its necessary...

Really?
My 3-mdsxq is over a year old, and still looks like new. Of course, it has no fan...

Yes, a fan just accumulates all the dust around and let me tell you there is not suposed to be much dust around the house, the issue is that I have forced ventilation from the outside into the machinery room where the sump and pumps are installed so I have been getting dust in every time there is gardening or mowing outside. I need to do something about filtering that air. The issue is that that is the same air that goes into my skimmer.

Is it easily wiped off or blown out with compressed air? How does it run? If it's just cleaning, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Build up is expected in our hobby, isn't it?

Took it all apart, cleaned it up (what a mess!), and it does run right. Since it's a pressed to gether motor, I couldn't get the motor apart to clean inside it. I thought about spraying some motor cleaner through it, but without taking it apart, sometimes that does more harm than good, so I decided not to. I did take the fan cover off and clean in there as well as the pump housing. It looks good so far. Motor runs quietly.
