Hey Capt. Pete,
I was just at the CV Dinat clam farm a few months ago. LOTS of blue squamosas. But the guy told me they were selling those at high prices to European wholesalers. In fact, I tried to hook them up with Barry Neigut (ClamsDirect) and they weren't even interested. Tried to e-mail them a couple more times since I got home to see if they'd change their minnd - they don't reply. Oh yeah, they are raising porcellanus, too, which is what I actually wanted for myself more than a blue squa... |

One more thing - the facility manager told me they were getting about 10% blues from every batch of squamies produced. So, if he's not lying then blues aren't rare there - just rare here.

Maybe there's a huge pearl inside each one!

critterkeeper,
Thanks for the info. Let me know if they reply as I would be interested in both the blue squamosa and the porellanus. |

you know what, would never pay a grand for any coral or clam, my ego just isn't big enough...they can have it. I hope they're for real and not dyed, you never know nowadays with science and technology. I would imagine that if these are natural they would appear more frquently and if rare they should be popping up this frequently at 4 to 6 inches.
Any info on these guys? Where are they from? why the heavy blue tones?

the sad thing is with people willing to pay such prices we all get priced out of this hobby.

Alot of corals and clam pictures on that vendors website sure look like they are under actinic lighting only.

Thanks Barry! Where do you collect your clams for distribution?
I have three squas in my tank, all are less then a hundred pesos each (or less than $2, US). wild collected, unfortunately

As Barry said it is supply and demand, but in the case of the Blue Squamosa there is NO supply, while the Color TD and gold TD are found in thousands in Solomons and Vietnam.
The Indonesian dude who have them is not getting Cites to export them and since he also happen to be one of the biggest coral exporters in the world (wild and cultured) it doesnt really bother him. The minute he will get a cites the price will drop, but if the situation will stay the same---no chance! There are Blue Squamies in other places as well, I have some pics taken in Malaysia, but the Bali guy was the only one who saw the potential in captive breeding those. The fine people in ORA have their own Blue Squamosas which are not nearly as nice, however the main problem is that only recently they "discovered" their Blue Squamosa, hopefully now, with some selective breeding they would be able to market their Blue Squamies but it'll take time. |

quick question, do blue squammies grow as fast as their brown counterparts? cuz if they don't then the heck with it lol, a BIG blue clam would be the only attraction for me.

Yeah they do grow as fast.
Before there were big wild blue maxima available, but I didnt see them for awhile now. |

ok , if they grow fast then they're worth more than a big blue max in my book. you'll never see a 14" blue max ;-)
