Need QUICK answer Mix Six Line and Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse?

Want to place an order for a Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse. I have a Six Line already in a 90G. Will they mix, or will it be WWIII?

Mixing Fairy wrasses and sixline wrasse is a bad idea unless in a big tank then your chances are little bit better. In a 90g it will most likely end up in a fight.

We did it in a 100g with a Ruby Headed Fairy wrasse and a 6line. It wasnt WWII because the fairy wrasse wouldnot fight back. The 6line was a third of his size and we ended up seperating them...the 6line would not give up.

A friend of mine tried this last year in his 215g. The Six Line went crazy trying to attack the new Wrasse. He ended up trapping the Six Line and selling it. The Red Head Solon is a much nicer fish. I would get rid of the Six Line if you really want one.

Yeah, the Solar is a nicer looking fish for sure. Its odd. The Six Line is probably the most passive fish out of any that I have. A real wimp. Its hard to imagine it getting that aggressive. I guess I'll just keep things as is.

Looks can be decieving. The sixline is very passive towards other fish. But somehow, something about small fairy wrasses brings the pitbull out of them....and don't let their small size fool ya. They can kick some bootie.

I have a similar question..

I have a sixline wrasse right now and I would like to transfer him to my 450 Gallon system tomorrow which already has a lineatus wrasse and I plan on adding 2 leopard wrasses and 2 possum wrasses in the very near future. I have read varying posts on whether the sixline can be kept with other wrasses...?? Will it be OK?

IME when I've added a Sixline after,I've never had a problem . It's onbly been a problem with certain fish that are added after the Sixline is established.

WAIT! I tried to combine a 6-line with an ornate leopard wrasse in my reef....NO WAY JOSE!!! The 6-line went from a shy hermit like fish to a friggin terror....almost killed the leopard wrasse!

Certainly there are no givens as to what would be the outcome.
In my last home aquarium I went through three Sixlines. I had one, added something new,it chased it,I caught it ( the Sixline),took it back to the shop, caught another one(smaller),added it,everything was fine until I added something else that it didn't like. Did this three times. Having been through that and if I wanted to add another to a tank that I was going to have mates that it may fight with,I'd add the Sixline(a smaller one) last.

The sixline will be one of the last fishes addd and it will be the last wrasse added.

I have the lineatus wrasse in there now and today I get 2 possum wrasses and a labouti wrasse. I am waiting on one of the wholesalers to get leopard wrasses back in stock because it has been a while. I can hold the sixline in a frag tank until I get my hands on Leopard wrasses and then will add the sixline last..

geshield,

I'd say still be very vigilant once you finally place the sixline in as the last fish.

I've placed a sixline in 2 year old established tank with 5 older fairy wrasses and he killed one and was chasing a second down when I finally got him out. The sixline was the last fish I placed in that tank.

It's very hit or miss with sixlines in my opinion........kinda like placing dwarf angels in a reef. Some hobbyists like myself, have had no incidents with a dwarf angel picking on corals. While others have had numerous problems.
However, in the case of sixlines the percentages are higher for the fish to be aggressive. I'd say 65 - 70% chance he will be aggressive towards other wrasses. Yes, I have heard of a couple of experiences where hobbyists have had sixlines with no problems. But I think that is the exception and not the rule.

All I'm saying is....be very careful.

bronco7777,

thanks for the reply. Maybe I will just keep him in my frag tank. I would hate to have to try and catch him once he is in the 450G..

I've had my sixline for years and through many tanks, and as much as he's grown on me I'd stay away from them in any system if given the chance again. Just days ago I added some more squamapinnis anthias to my 180 where he resides, and I was cursing at the sixline as he pusued these new additions, ignoring the existing anthias and only chasing the new additions. What frustration... Two days later the aggresion subsided.

Two months ago I had to remove my peppermint hogfish from the 180 after we moved and I tried to mix them adding them to the tank at the same time. Right then I regretted adding the sixline... but unfortunately I'd have to remove every piece of rock to get that guy out as they are intelligent and evasive.

He'll be the only wrasse in the system now obviously. The aggression they possess is not the passive tail wagging and initial interest we see tangs show when new additions are added, but rather a pursuant "I'll chase you until I kill you!" aggression.

They may look innocent, but they are terrors I'd try and avoid, even in large systems... and I'm a risk taker with angels in my reef!

Reading this is really something. My wife pokes fun at the Six Line saying it is such a "wimpy fish"! The only fish I've added since the Six Line is a Flame Angel. The FA is the largest fish in the tank and nobody messed with it at all when it went in. Out of anything I have, my Blenny and Royal Gramma seem to be the least happy when a new fish is added. They really harassed the Six Line when it was added. The Six Line just ignored them.

I recently had a C. rubriventralis (Social Fairy Wrasse) that jumped. We had added a six-line one week prior. It all makes sense now...
