Hey Dean,
The largest single factor for me was noise and heat (before it all went to the basement anyway). FLow is flow, calculations are readily available here and on other sites. Reliability is also good, but day to day aquarium pump noise is unacceptable if you are trying to listen to your stereo, or the kids are watching some mindless hollywood crap intended for drones. I have a Iwaki70 and it ain't quiet, great pump for a basement though. Where will your pump located internal or external to the 180? If ex consider the noise and plumbing behind/underneath the living space. If in can you deal with the added energy (heat)?

Many use Ampmasters or Sequence pumps for closed loops. Energy efficient and lots of flow. +Quiet and no heat transfer.

I think the sequence dart is the best choice. I bought one for my 180.
Takes a 2" suction line. That is the bigest problem with this pump.

What is the difference between an ampmaster and a sequence pump anyway????

Pretty much boiled down to the reputation of the seals for me. Price was a small factor also.
If the ampmaster seals were as troublefree as the seqences seem to be, I might have went with the ampmaster.

Just floating out possibilities......
Another way to go is pick a pressure rated pump and place eductors on the returns for a TON of water movement. I was pretty much decided on the Ampmaster 3000, but a few negative threads and watching gregt's eductor videos have me thinking about it again.

I thought the same thing and actually purchased a 3/4" eductor. Man is that thing big.
2-1/2" in diameter and 6" long. If you want those in your tank, go ahead. I decided not to.

deansreef,
it is basically a "nozzle" you place on your return line on the end that increases the velocity of the water flow - similar to placing a nozzle on your garden hose that creates a jet flow ... hope this helps... do a search for the gregt thread- he has some great info on his thread including a video clip gm
