pond liner in saltwater?

i was wondering if pond liner would be saltywater safe..being that it wont leetch into the water, and wont be eaten away by the saltwater.

i am not sure..but i think there is liner made of pvc...and i think polyurothene or sumthing like that

any info on this would be great! thanks very much

Are you thinking of EPDM? That's what is used to line koi ponds.

not sure

i am not sure really

all i know is if you set up a pond a diga hole, there are a few liners you can use to line the pond....most are thick black liners
that i think are made of a few different materials

im wondering if the pond liners are reefsafe and wont be destroyed by the salt or what types would be safe

again thanks for the reply and any info is much appreciated!

EPDM is what your thinking of. It's pond safe, I'm not sure about saltwater. It's that same stuff intertubes are made of....you can by it in different thickness' & sizes.

oh yeah

is it made of pvc? cause i called homedepot and they got pond liner made outta pvc apparently

how do you think the liner you mentioned would far with saltwater....if its made for the outdoors and the elements out there i would imagine its pretty sturdy stuff....however i know saltwater to be capable of destruction to almost anyhting.

Sorry Ryan, I don't know for sure that EPDM is salt safe. Maybe someone else on the board will speak up.

I don't know if it is salt safe. My guess would be, Yes. Anyone know for sure?

You can get different kinds of pond liners. The most common are PVC, this is like a trash bag and EPDM, like an innertube.

PVC is usually less expensive and will get brittle from UV exposure. They are more prone to tearing than EPDM.

EPDM is rubber. I think it is a butyl. It is more expensive and does not have the UV problems of PVC. It is also tear resistant. Just like the rubber in you car tire, you can push on it and it won't easily cut. This makes it good for the bottom of a pond where you would be setting large rocks with sharp edges or getting in and walking around.

Both products are made in many different thickness' and with slightly different chemical makeups.

I can't find the link right now but there is at least one RC'r that is using pond liner in his set up. He lined a DIY sump with the liner, try searching the big tank forums and you might find him.

EPDM in saltwater

According to this thread , EPDM should be safe for SW use. I have a little of it lying around from when I built my pond a few years back.

What the heck... I'll build a small SW pond and give it a try. I'll get back with results maybe within 4-8 weeks.
