a new idea! a way to sumberse inline pumps .. will it work?
this idea is to work with inline pumps, for people with glass sumps who dont want to drill the sump
i have though of a way to submerse inline pumps by making a container that is completley waterproof and has a tube for intake and a tube for outtake for the pumps without leaking water in taht fits any pump perfectly...a take 4 inch diameter pvc..with 2 end caps for each end....drill a hold in the one end of the endcap for the intake of the pump..then drill a hold in the top of the pvc for the outtake..........place tubes going into the pvc hold that fit tight and attach then to the pump input and output...i have a special think glue that can be added around the tubes to seal them shut so no water can leak in at the pump. so basically i will ahve an iwaki completley sealed in a pvc tube with the intake and outake tubes sticking out...also i will have the one end cap that i didnt drill hoes in for intake outake tubes, be threaded so i can screw it on and off so that i can get at the pump if i find the need to..this way i can submerse the pump in the sump........will this work? |

I would think the pump would need room to breath.... It might get hot in the pvc pipe. You would have water around the pvc that would cool the air inside the pvc but it would also heat your water. I don't think this would be a good idea. Just buy a submersible pump???

there is no sumbersable pump that dosent heat the water greatly that is good enough for a 32 inch tall beckett skimmer
inline skimmers such as the iwaki, little gian and mak 4 come are fan cooled so they wont get to hot....i would still ahve to find out more about the heat issue but otherwise thanks for the reply i never thoguh of the heat...any more suggestion would be great |

any pump is likely to run very hot. It is likely to reduce the lifespan of any inline pump you would want to use. It really is no big deal to get the sump drilled

yes it is
acutally there are no places to get it done around here, but anyways....i have another idea....change in designsame thing only have a 2 inch diameter pipe comming out the top of the 4 inch pvc pipeing all the way outta the sump...you can even have the outake of the pump go out this area....this would cause airflow....even 2 2 inch pipes would work
you must realise the only reason i am comming up with this is because there is no place near my home that i can get a tank drilled....thanks still post me what you think |

Ryan,
All you have to do is have a U tube made of PVC attached to the inlet of the pump. You can start the siphon and the pump by using a small powerhead and filling inside the U tube with water to start the siphon. |

Ryan, any glass shop should have the ability to drill your holes. The only problem is, once you mention it's a tank, they'll let you know they don't guarantee the work.
No place really wants to guarantee the work if it's not something you're buying from them, this includes just an ordinary piece of glass. You may have to just take your chances and trust them. It really isn't that hard to do... just ask that one of the senior most guys that's been with that particular company and they should do fine. Good luck. Chris |

strikes me as a high risk setup, not only will the pump have no way of getting wast heat away, or if it can it will heat the tank water. But also should there be an leak, (possible with a pump vibrating in a sealed tube, you will loose the pump and possibly the tank if it trips the power, and if the power does not trip you now have a live tank!!!.
It would be better to get a hole drilled, get a sub pump or use the pvc u over the top of the sump and abck down to a pump |

How about an acrylic sump? With all that trouble, it may just be worth it to get an acrylic tank and drill it, or get a custom made sump but those can get real pricey.
You do have a neat idea though.... You forgot about the cord, but if you had another pipe leading out of the water, you could fit the powercord through there.

I agree with getting the tank drilled. Why risk the potential of getting it wet? You can find a glass guy, be it a glass shop, a car windsheild shop, or a guy who runs his own LFS (I just found one who charges $20 a hole but will not gurentee it if it is tempered glass, or a tank that he does not know the manufacture) and get it drilled. You might even be able to find another reefer in your area who will do it for you..... But I would not risk it.

basically if i do the u tube iea which seems pretty much straight forwards............is the syphone gonna remain on the tube if the power goes out...basically i dont want the power to go out..the tube empty of water and my pump fry!
