Angry What's worse than LE corals

Recently I participated in an active discussion regarding LE corals and how some feel it ruins the hobby. I think what's truly bad are dyed corals because it erodes the trust people have in each other, and once there's something that's never been seen, cynicism sets in and the possibility of it being dyed looms over like a foreboding shadow.

My first experience was when I bought an Orange Toadstool 5 yrs ago. Typically the leather variety are dyed, but today, I received confirmation from someone else that they bought a dyed xenia(not from me), so I have this feeling that my credibility may be on the line now esp since I have ones that few have ever seen.

Being in retail for 8 years, sales manager for 3, and now business owner, you learn to tell the difference between objection and excuse.

Just a comparison for what really messes up the hobby. I'm not against LE, I think it's great that there are exceptional corals.

If they are dyed, would the Limited part mean, limited lifespan?

Ok, hold up, we're getting things mixed up now.

NO we are not saying dyed corals are getting sold as Limited Editions.

Limited Edition corals are NOT dyed corals

Limited Edition corals are not bad for the hobby while dyed corals are.

People who dye corals and sell them should be skinned..

For those that are interested in the background of "what is an LE coral?" please see the original thread that Xenia is referring to: Limited Editions: Why the hype?.

wow that looks amazing, i can see why people would want to buy them. i've never seen dyed xenia though, maybe i just dont get out enough i've seen plenty of the dyed leathers...always falling over and limp after a week or two in the store. XeniaMania- I can see why you get upset, i was taught from early on to be suspicious about any especially uniquely colored specimens...its probably hard to cinvince people that yours arent dyed too. i dont get why people would dye them though. dont they lose business in the long run? i know if i bought a coral that lost all its color and died for no reason (dyed) i wouldnt go back to that place for a long time if ever.

For the three or so years that I've been comeing to this site to learn about reefkeeping this topic seems to cycle in from time to time. It seems about every six months or so a string of dyed corals starts comeing in. This is one reason I don't order online...I really like being able to look at an undisturbed coral before I buy it. That way I can see if it looks healthy or not. Many times when people are getting a dyed coral, the thought of it being dyed does not even cross their mind. I'm really not sure what can be done other than research the item you want to buy... However, even then that does not always work. Just because some one has never seen a certain color morph does not mean it doesn't exist....all I can say is be carefull...
But I'm with you..I hate dyed corals.

then it sounds like it made it. From what I've read in the past a lot of the dyed corals do not last. If it's expelled the dye and is growing then that sound like it will be alright.

The one that ticks me off is the pink leathers. I mean come on. I have seen stores try to sell this crap all the time. LEATHERS ARE NOT PINK.

Nor bright yellow, nor orange. The Fungia corals are dyed as well, and it's obvious once it dies because the skeleton is colored and not white.

Actually, there are BRIGHT YELLOW leathers.

One of the tanks near me has one that is the color of a highlighter, and has been that way for years.
