Mimic Eel

I saw an eel at the fish store the other day and was interested enough to consider tearing down my 175 reef to convert to fish only. Much less trouble and energy consumption. I am looking for some information about this fish. It is ringed in black and white and I believe is a mimic for a poisonous sea snake. Does anybody know what I am talking about? Any info? Does anybody have one?

The had a really nice one at my LFS, they told me last night it had sold to a guy who put it in a tank with an anenome, which killed the eel.

I believe what you are describing is the Zebra Moray Gymnomuraena Zebra). This is a very docile species and grows to a size of about 4'9" roughly so fairly large. It requires an aquarium I would say no smaller than 200 gallons to ensure its happy. I always tend to think larger though. As for food its diet should include meaty food sush as fresh fish, clams, squid, scallops, shrimp. And since eels tend to be "blind" make sure you target feed using a feeding stick both for your own safty and the eels.

Its one of my favourite eels, so if you can properly house it. I would go for it. Just make sure you have alot of rock work for the eel to hide in, and a TIGHT lid so it doesnt escape.

Thanks, Brenden
