i agree, no shrooms, no xenia, no green star polyps, no zoanthids.
there will be a RBTA, hopefully it will stay on it's own little island i do have a large bubble, some frogspawn and other LPS corals that will go in the tank along with the SPS corals. |

my largest clam has a few zoanthid polyps growing on it. how to remove them prior to putting in the new tank?
did i say no Aptasia or Mojano's either? one batch of live rock that is in the outside container brought in some of them and there are quite a few now. i will be pulling each rock, examining it and cutting off the anemone outside the tank, then burning the stump with potasium permanganate, PP, and putting it in another QT tank until i am sure it is all gone. |

Just go nuclear on those Aptasia. do exactly what you just described, except use a propane blowtorch to cook them off.

just scrape the zoanthids off the clam and use a clean 3M pad to finish the surface. Aiptasia is a whole nuther game. I would pull the rock and let it sit out dry for a month. Then I would dip it in lighter fluid, light it on fire, and when they run out into the clearing, I would hit them with a ball peen hammer....
Oh wait, that's the cure for crabs.

Tweezers are all you should need to rip off zoas at the base. Just be sure to wash them before putting back in wive's medicine cabinet.

1-1-08 happy new year! the tank and closed loop is holding water. hurray!
two Sequence Hammerhead pumps. here is the pattern of the ten holes in the bottom of the tank. first number is pump, second is outlet. OceansMotions 4 way returns. they feed two at a time opposites, 1 and 3, then 2 and 4. 1-1 2-1 1-2 2-2 return to pump 1 return to pump 2 1-3 2-3 1-4 2-4 right now there is about 10" of water in the tank and the closed loops are rocking and rolling, like being on the ocean on a stormy day as they fire straight up at the water surface. i am liking the way the water surges up and down. lots of time to play with the direction of the flow but it looks really cool now. the straight up will definitely be the first iteration. check out the waves. insulation under the tank will get another layer, it is already very quiet from pump sounds in the living room. the pumps are below the floor level but right now open at one end into the closet. this will eventually get blocked off as well. a few days of freshwater testing and then i can put in some saltwater and start aquascaping. i am so excited!! congrats Carl! It's nice to have the plumbing behind you isnt it?

yes, at least for now. there is still much plumbing months down the line. for now you know it will run without overflows, sump, skimmer, lights or pretty much anything but pumps, LR and freshly seeded sand.
now i have to get out there and work on the LR. Carl |

Really nice... I have a few questions on the Skylight though... Did you have to have it custom made? What is its exact size?
Thanks Tagging along...

here is a shot from the roof down before we put the skylight on.
finished the roof yesterday around the skylight. the posts are for the solar system to be installed in the next few weeks. about 9 KW system. just in time as today the biggest storm since 2005 is due to hit. the skylight should be easy to keep clean from the deck. just need to do it. in the back yard the deck over the pond has been great to do the construction but i am looking forward to it being gone. no way i can catch a fish with the deck in place. soon stucco will be done and lights up then it can come down. Interesting. My cousin Donn has his house extending over his koi pond a lot like your temporary deck.
So I take it you didn't get that paint from the Israelis that generates electricity!

the second floor cantilevers out to the edge of the pond.
so the second floor becomes a kind of roof over the first floor deck by the pond. Carl |

Are you being made to put in the photovoltaic system, or is a choice? I looked into them 12 months ago, but the cost was rediculous for the amount of energy that it generates. Love the koi pond. Chris. |

thanks, i too love the Koi pond although if i had discovered reefing first i probably would only have a reef tank. much more interesting with the whole ecosystem thing.
and it is in the house where it can be enjoyed in the living room. and it is cheaper. i have bought most of my Koi when they are babies, one year old and they are still more than any reef fish i have bought. reef fish don't eat two pounds of food a day! koi pond turn over rates are only about once every two hours though. i will probably have more watts running the pumps on the new tank than the 20,000 gallon koi pond which has three pumps totaling about 16 amps per hour, 24/7. nobody can make you put in a solar system in america. it is pricey but it will pay for itself in about 7 years, and then it's FREEEEEEEEEEEEE! worth every penny. I had no idea a koi pond was so expensive, more than a reef tank with all the equipment and electrical power consumption? wow
