How does a pagod cup grow

I recently got a small 5 in. pagoda cup coral. Will this coral grow by building more skeleton or does it need to spread over rock?

My pagoda cups grew slowly by making new skeleton on its edges. It did not encrust the adjacent rock. Also my pagoda skeleton was extremely dense and hard to break. Mine grew very slowly but was always very healthy.HTH
