Clown losing dark colours
My clown fish is losing its dark colours. The black lines between the orange have all but disappeared and the black from his tail is very faint. Anyone seen this before.
Don't have a picture but I can get one if needed. I have had the two clows for over a year and the one was always darker than the other but now it is like night and day. Thanks FB |

I don't have much experience at all with this (I've only been in the hobby about 9 months), but it sounds like a lack-of-nutrients problem.
However, looking at the food you have listed, I don't know. You're definitely feeding your fish better than I feed mine. I'm still using the cheap flake food that came with my aquarium and the collors of all three of my fish (an ocellaris clown, royal gramma, and bicollor blenny) are all as bright as they were when I bought them 6 months ago). Maybe try switching the flake food with another brand and see how that goes? It might take a while for him to collor back up though... |

Not sure if this will help your specific problem, but Ocean Nutrition's Formula One was developed to help keep the color of Clownfishes from being dull... it's worth a shot IMO

My food claims the same thing. I don't think it is a food problem as all my other fish are very bright and vibrant. They all eat very well. Nobody esle has any thoughts.

Though you've had the clown for a year, you probably don't know the actual age of the fish. The colors on clownfish fade over time, and they eventually lose some of their stripes. I've had a maroon clownfish (Joe) in my tank for over 7 years now and my guess is that he is about 8 yrs old. At this point he has turned a dark burgundy color and he is down to 3 half stripes. Could be your clown is now a senior citizen.

He is larger than the other clown. I have no idea how old he could be. I'll try and take a picture tonight.

FB, The larger clown of your pair is a female...
and Fat_Ed, if your maroon is the only one in the tank, then at that age it will be female too, so maybe "Joe" can be short for Josephine?
