So I guess we were overfeeding Blackjack...

With all my previous dogs I've always just made sure their food bowl was full and they ate when they wanted. I guess it worked just fine, because I've never had a fat dog.

But Jack seems to really go through a LOT of food so I finally checked the chart on the bag and measured his bowl. The chart says he should have 5.5 or 6 cups per day. He's been eating about 16 cups per day. What a pig! It looks like I'll have to meter a dog's food for the first time.

I have a dog that will eat ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING....

He eats lettuce, green peppers, apples, carrots, and as much dog food as you will let him. When I open the pantry, he does his best to get a drive buy mouth full from the bag.

Since they're not meant to digest some of that stuff, I imagine he can be pretty smelly?

my cat will eat till she makes herself sick.

Satori - Blackjack sounds like my cat in that she dumpster divedin order to survive. And it became ingrained that when food was around it must be eaten

That could be. We never did ask how he ended up at the pound. He could have been a stray for some time.

had my cat for close to 3 years now, she was still a kitten when I found her, she still wil eat till she pops, i thought it would wear off once she figured out food would be there, when she was 15lb cat on a 10lb cat frame I started measuring her food out and got her back to a healthy weight.

She does better if I feed half in the morning and half in the evening. Keeps her from begging all day and night

Wow, that's a ton of food! My 50 pound pit gets 2 cups a day, she was free fed before I got her and chunky to prove it. My buddy on the other hand goes through 40 pounds of food a month free feeding his 70 pound dog. I couldn't afford that. My cat also has to be regulated or she will eat until she pukes and then eat some more, she gets 3/4 cup of Felidae spread out to about six little feedings. I can't belive any dog could eat that much food in a day! Maybe he thinks it's running out, gotta stock up now.

my dogs get 3 cups a day. my big guy was a stray for 2 years before i got him, and he eventually learned that there is now a steady supply of food. he will still wander back to the burn pit and eat the most disgusting thing he can every chance he gets, though.

Wow, 2 cups for Goingpostal's dog and 3 cups for your dog. Suddenly the chart on the puppy food sounds like a lot. Jack's 29 pounds.

Umm Christy - what are guchies?...

I was feeding my Aussie 3 cups a day and my Border Collie 2 cups per day and was told by the vet to cut both in half.

It doesn't matter if I cut there food in half or leave it the same; as long as there are pecans on the ground they will eat those all day long and still be hungry!

I thought I would like to have a pecan tree.....until the dogs discovered them and decided they liked them better than I do. I think next year I will figure out how to rope up a net around the tree to the other trees and keep them off of the ground and away from the dogs. I really am tired of having to pick up pecan shells ALL over the house!

Pups do need more food, what kind are you feeding though? If it's lower quality he'll need more too. 16 is way too much but 3-4 is about normal for a pup I think.

LOL, Rusty's getting fat since he found out he could go into the dog door and eat all Wally's food.
