so wile at his house after we put the corals in the weirdest thing happened. we fed the fish and all the fish ate like they normally do. the lights fadded out and the moons came on. as we cleaned out the the skimmer we noticed the sailfin tang spazz out. im talking just start blowing over and spazzing. it looked as if it got hit buy a truck. and the fish was just eating and swimming around not 10 mins before this. the fish died within 30 seconds. it was both of our favorite fish and i have no clue what happened. iv never seen or heard of anything like it. when i took it out and examined it there seemed to be nothing wrong with it. there were no marks or ick on it. if anyone has heard or seen anything like this please tell me.

That is very hard to guess, based on what you described. I'm sorry it died.

that really is exactly what happened. it couldn't have been electrocution because my hand was in the tank all day. it couldn't have been anything on my hands because nothing else is doing fine. just a weird thing i guess

Installed the new acrylic sump custom made bt MELEV. Took out the old glass 40gb that was cracked. Also added a Tunze auto top off controller(works great).Wish I could have done as soon as I got Melev, but I've been working some 12 hour days. Great job on the sump here are some pictures.

yes you need a gatevalve with a T before to the sump to reduce the air bubbles going into the skimmer

We did use the gate valve as Melev suggestion, and it did work well as you can see the pictures of protein skimmer and what its pulling out of the tank. The gate valve allows better regulation of water flow. Another great suggestion from Melev on my upgrade. The water from the T I have returning to the other side of the sump.

I like how it looks in your stand. I'm not sure why you needed such a large piece of eggcrate before the second set of baffles. It would seem you only needed it at the top.

Your collection up still looks a bit tough to get to. Do you have the room to rotate the skimmer 180 degrees and let the outlet run behind the collection cup to the end of the sump, or is the Tee fitting already glued in place? I'm guessing it is glued. A union or coupling would allow you to do a little surgery, but you may not want to do that. Having it behind would give you more access to the refugium from the front.

mbaychuk - I noticed the water level in your sump is relatively high. Do you know if the sump can accomodate the additional water from the top of the tank if there was a power failure?

I only asked because b/c I did some calculation a while back and my sump was cutting it close. Just curious if you know how much gallons that might be?

it fits without problems. i think the water comes up about another inch and a half. the water is a little higher then it was but where getting it worked out
as for the skimmer its actually very easy to get into the refugium and access the sump. and the skimmer cup comes right out with no problems.

I always do a dummy power failure to be sure the sump can handle the water when I choose the water level in the sump. I have plenty of lead way when the power is off. My thought is more water I can have the better
