Positive. The shape of the gall is distinctive, plus the feeding behavior is much more active than a barnacle.

Not sure on the Gall Crab. Also, they tend to kill acro over time by stressing it.

This little bugger is fast. All but the first of these new images was shot with flash at 1/500 -- as soon as the flash fired, it'd retreat.
Here's a shot of the opening, it's open space in there: These next couple show the critter emerging to swing it's feathery claws around: Retreated to cover, sick of the Paparazzi I guess More shots of feeding: Barnacles are bivalves, which this critter obviously isn't. I should probably ask in the Inverts forum...

You are 100% right, its no barnacle. At first glance it looks similar but your close ups prove otherwise.

Aren't Gall crabs considered parasites?

Not from what I've been able to find; they don't feed upon the coral they just live in it.

Im sorry, but it is not a Gall Crab. It IS a barnacle and it will weaken your acro.

Yeah, looks like the rest of the world is right and I'm wrong. Hate when that happens Somewhere along the way, I got the mistaken idea that barnacles are bivalves. Live and learn, thanks guys.

So what can be done to kill the barnacle since it weakens the acro?
Sorry, I'm new to SPS so just trying to learn.

I find that you can literally "scoop" them out. The whole calcified section is a roundish ball and will pop right off the acro. This usually damages a little tissue around the area on the acro, but encourages new growth. HTH.
