Didn't you ask this a few weeks ago? I recall something pretty similar.

What kind of tangs do you want? I have always been partial to the purple/power blue combo, but that's just me.

theres so many tangs to choose from. im having trouble deciding on whos compatable and just how many....
i have a few months to go, i just want to make sure i buy the right ones

i was gonna get a few yellow but then i keep reading that they can be aggressive
so now im back to square one

sorry if you find my posts annoying. this is a forum and new people with new ideas come along everyday

That's fine. I just got a feeling of dejavu.

When is your upgrade? I wouldn't add tangs until the tank is passing the six month benchmark after cycling. That's just my opinion. But I think that they prefer a stable enviornment.

Mix and match the speices. A zebrasoma, an arcanthurus, etc., but also have some chromis, anthias, blennies, etc., to keep the tank active. I have become really partial to the anthias, they are so much fun to watch.

the tank is setup for about 2 weeks now
im still in the cycling phase, 1 ppm ammonia that doesnt seem to want to budge

i was going to wait three or four months, but i can hold out for six
first fish i will add are the chromis, i just pray they dont pick each other off. id like 12 chromis
anthias are beautiful...a little delicate maybe??

They can be. They are so worth it, IMO. They move with such fluidity. Enjoy!

take into consideration the full adult size. i would say 5-6 zebramosas/Ctenochaetus species. Nasos/blue tangs or the like i would only have 1-2.

Maybe a blue tang, a yellow, purple, chevron and achilles/powder blue.

I'd trade the kole for a naso or a larger tang. Try to mix up the families a little. I know in such a big tank there won't be territory issues, but I"d rather have a larger tang in such a big tank.

no i must have a kole
they are actually my favorite, so i may have to get tangs that are only compatable with the kole

are koles docile? is that the problem?

I would go with:

blue tang
yellow tang
purple tang
kole tang

give them room and overcrowding with tangs can lead to many things detrimental to your tank.

For what it's worth, I am going to have 5 tangs in my new 375 and am concerned that this might be overkill.

Purple (already in the tank)
Hippo
Powder Blue
Chevron
Mimic

You should look at the mimic's...they are beautiful.

My list will also include 2 rabbit's, few wrasse, 2 clowns, royal gramma, emperor and majestic angel.

Might go with some anthias as well. Small school would be real nice.

I think 4 is the absolute max you could put in a 220. Yellow and hippo are good together. Powder blue are touchy, but beautiful. I have a yellow and a hippo together for about 6 years now, and they are okay. Occasionally they push each other, but the hippo is the biggest, therefore the boss.

would it be wise to make sure the yellow is the smallest tang added?

It depends what you are putting the yellow with. If it's with a pbt or a hippo, I would put in the yellow after the other one, and it wouldn't hurt if the yellow was smaller. When I got my hippo tang, I made sure it was the biggest fish at the time, and it still is. If however, you are putting a yellow with a purple, I would get them young and add together.

Thought you have a naso already?? If you do i would go naso/kole/hippo/purple. Nice mix of colors and aggression should be minimal with the purple tang being the aggressive one out of the bunch but being added last should help. 4 seems like a good number for tangs you probably might get away with 5 but thats it. If you don't have the naso then two smaller tangs might work in its place.

yep i have the naso, hes still in the 55g and doing well.
im not so sure i will be adding him though to the 220 for a few reasons
1. how the heck am i gonna get him out?..theres too many rocks
2. the 55g has had its fair share of parasites, so im a little hesitant about adding him to my 220, he may be a carrier of parasites even though hes not showing any signs
3. hes not too friendly, he pushes around my niger trigger and valentini puffer, i dont know how he would react to another tang
4. im afraid of stressing him by moving him, ive lost fish before with moves and switcharoos

im not saying i wont move him, just kinda undecided at the moment. hes so cute with those big orange lips
and id hate for anything to happen to him because of something i did
