Bizzare Chemistry

Hi,

My continuing saga of high calcium is driving me nuts. Just got another sample tested (4th Time with different test kits). If someone can work this out that would be great!

Calcium :560
Magnesium: 2000
kH: 13

pH: 8.0 (I keep buffering and it keeps dropping)
Nitrate: 1
Ammonia: 0.1
Nitrite: 0
SG: 1.024

And no there isnt any precipitation.

Howdy Fil,

I was just about to post the same question. Does uber high calcium cause any problems? My CA reactor hasn't been working and I messed around with it the other day. Now I have the following readings:

Calcium :640!!!
kH: 8.8

pH: 8.0
Nitrate: 30
Nitrite: .25
Ammonia: 0.0
SG: 1.024

Thanks

Are you using Oceanic salt mix? It has excessive calcium in it. Have you measured the starting salt mix?

Adding buffer to raise pH is not generally a good idea as it raises alkalinity and doesn't do much for pH.

You are adding nothing with calcium in it? What about your top off water?

FWIW, at a pH of 8.0 and with excessive magnesium, it does not surprise me that you've not had any precipitation with those calcium and alkalinity values.

A calcium level of 560 ppm is not harmful, as far as I know.

Hi Randy

Im using coral life Calcium which does seem to have high calcium in it. My biggest concern is that sinse using hte Seachem reef buffer additive my corals have retracted and now even my anemone has shrunken. Would high alk have this affect and or high magnesium?

Cheers

I've not heard of many folks with magnesium that high. It might cause some concerns. The alkalinity isn't a problem as long as the calcium is OK, IMO.

How did you measure the magnesium?

Any idea how it got that high?

The guy at the LFS did the test on two speerate kits. One was a JBL kit and it was a titration type test. Both came up around the 2000 mark. From what I understood, the mg had to be at a ratio of around 3:1 ca...so that sounds about right to keep it ionically balanced ... ???

I would not target magnesium to be at a ratio to calcium. It should be near NSW levels at about 1250-1350 ppm optimally (IMO).
