Is manganese the same thing as magniesium?

Manganese and magnesium are totally different.
Mn = Manganese Natural seawater conc less than 1 ppb , very important trace element Mg = Magnesium Natural seawater conc approx 1300 ppm = 1,300,000 ppb

So would it be beneficial to add either of these to our tanks?

FWIW Manganese is easily preciptated in seawater and most of the magnese will be bound to organics.
I don't know if the question is because of the article by Tim Hovanac but in one of the salts the Mn conc was so high (if the measurement was correct) that it would form a precipitate unless a complex forming agent was present in the salt.

Many trace element supplements will/should contain manganese but also the food we add. I think it is beneficial to add but I'm also a manufacturer of trace element supplements.

Actually the question is because of the article on gonioporas and the addition of iron and manganese. Some people think this helps them. http://advancedaquarist.com/issues/dec2002/invert.htm
taken from a post in the general discussion forum. Thanks!

Thanks, Habib.
Here are a couple of article on dosing iron, although they do not address goniopora: First Iron Article: Macroalgae and Dosing Recommendations http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/aug2002/chem.htm Second Iron Article: Iron: A Look at Organisms Other than Macroalgae http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/oct2002/chem.htm Here's one that details what magnesium does in aquaria: Magnesium in Reef Aquaria http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/oct2003/chem.htm I am not sure whether manganese dosing is necessary or not, or what forms are best to dose if needed. It is something that I'd like to know more about.
