I'd like to hear how the mod has performed for those who have done it over the last few months ... still worth the effort and cost of the Becketts?

It seems to work best with pumps that are not pressure rated.

I saw an increase when I was using it with a mag18 driving my skimmer.
I now have a Sequence Wahoo and it does not make as much difference

Curious, but not about to read the entire thread.....

I have a beckett skimmer runnning off of a Mag 12, so I have tried both the standard & modded beckett designs with some differences.

One question:

Has anyone tried to run the beckett WITHOUT the innermost piece ( the cross piece with the ball on the end )???

Just remove that piece and let me know what happens please.....

Stu

BUMP - !!

all this talk about optimizing a beckett......

Has anyone tried using it without the insert thingy with the ball??

I stared at my beckett, and contemplated the venturi concept.
I dont believe that the insert helps with changing flow to vacuum. ( the whole venturi concept ).

So I took out the insert, and my skimmer runs better than ever.

Anyone else willing to test?

Stu

how can that be? The ball is what makes the volume change. I don't see how it can work without the ball.

Can you take a pic of the beckett.

"how can that be? The ball is what makes the volume change. I don't see how it can work without the ball."

Here is a pic of a beckett ( not mine ) from this link:
http://www.rl180reef.com/pages/filtration/beckett.htm

The piece that I removed is the insert with the ball at the end.

Here's my thinking:

The whole concept of a venturi is to force water through a restriction. A restriction is a reduction in cross-sectional area that the water is flowing through. The change in area causes a change in flow velocity which in turn causes a vacuum that pulls in air.

If you examine one half of the beckett with the ball insert in it, you will see that the cross-sectional are of the region that the water flows through is essentially constant as the water passes around the ball and out the other end. This is also the region that the air holes are in. The beckett without the insert has a much larger change in cross sectional area right where the air holes are.

Another difference I see is that the beckett housing is completely empty of water. When running with the insert in, water leaks out through the seams in the beckett. The water level in the housing then fills up to the air holes where the water is sucked back into the beckett.

Now that I run without the insert, the water doesnt squirt out, and the vacuum created is obviously sucking IN through the seams near the bottom, and all the water was sucked out.

Stugray can you tell me about your beckett holder you have and how the air comes in top or side of the holder?

Rgibson, (and others) I took my ball insert out after having problems with it plugging so easily. I am not sure what was going on that was causing the problem but I grew tired of it. I noticed that the bubbles almost completely stopped, so I messed with the ball a little, cut wedges to help debris pass, reduce the size, etc., just to reduce the potential for blockage. None of it worked, it all reduced the effectiveness. BTW I used a VERY NOISY Iwaki 35 then a 70 RLT as my skimmer pump.

I ended up removing the ball insert completely and put an OceanRunner 3700 to just recirculate the water within the skimmer and add bubbles.

All in all I am a little disappointed in the beckett, especially in the long run. I could have done it all with a much smaller pump and a lot less headache. Having said all of that, I am not giving up on the beckett . . .yet.

It sounds like you dont have your beckett nozzle set up correctly.

Is this the same mods that the Korallen Zucht revolution skimmers that are being sold right now? There's a few pics of it with tiny holes on a shorten beckett.

The Korallen skimmer has done away with the beckett holder and replace it with a 1 1/2 standard bulkhead fitting on top of that thay put the beckett under water,it looks like a good idea and for a skimmer of that size with one beckett ,i think we will see more becketts skimmer builders making a change like the Korallen.

That is straight up a mod beckett injector like the ones shown here last year. They drilled some extra holes in a regular beckett injector and trimmed off some of it so it didn't stick out as far. They still have a housing which is black on the inside of the skimmer which they run the airline to. The principle is exactly the same and was talked about here a long time ago.

Funniest thing is I thought they were all about using needlewheels.

All of this looks like design in the US built in Germany.

I looked at a few videos of it and the performance doesn't look as good as some of the becketts being made here. The bubbles look like they get big a little too early. But its made in Germany so people will say its better and new technology.

Pretty easy to test- Drill more holes in a Beckett and compare.

I've done the same, including drilling the center piece. All my testing came up with no measurable change in results at best, and worse performance in many cases.

But it's good to experiment- drill away!

I did the mod to one of my two becketts.

I would just swap them out when it was time for cleaning.

I never saw a measurable difference.
