I recognized some of your pictures. Here's one I took. Look familiar?

Great pics, thanks for sharing! A lot of your shots are very familiar to me too, having been to Hawaii several times. Makes me even more excited for our trip to Maui and the big Island next month too! It will probably be our last vacation for awhile too since we are hoping to have a baby soon! Good luck with yours!

How was the weather while you were there? I've heard they've had some good rains lately.

Hey! That waterfall looks awful familiar!!!

Mano...weather was pretty consistent: 77-82 all week on both islands. The week before we were there they had some severe storms with 50+ mph winds that did a lot of damage. For example, the 800 ft waterfall, which is along the same trail as the 720 ft falls that Kevin and I posted pics of, was blocked off because of damage to the trails that needed to be repaired.

But while we were there nothing really beyond the usual "Hawaii 5 minute rains". The whales are/were just arriving in December so they should be increasing in numbers by now. Actual first sightings of whales began in November this year according to some folks.

The next time we go...whenever that might be...we want to go to Maui and Kuaui (sp???).

Thanks VR! I've never been in the winter before so looking forward to seeing how the islands are then.

Good job, VR! Nice pics.

I saw your post calling Waikiki a "city". One thing unusual about Oahu (and the other islands) is that each island is a county, and the county seat of each island is the only "city" on that island. For example, the city and county of Honolulu take up the entire island of Oahu. Other areas (Waikiki, Aiea, Pearl City, Kaimuki, Hawaii Kai, etc etc), are "census designated places" and have no separate municipal government.

take a drive around hana if you go to maui - yes the rental car agreement says you arent allowed to drive it but everyone does...just keep your eyes open as parts of the road are single lane bridges and the traffic flows two ways...craziest thing that probably no one cares about - all the invasive chickens roaming free on the island. They have no predators...(man excluded).

If you stay on kauai - check with the mrs to see if you want to stay on the wet lush north side (where the golf courses are) or the dry sunny beach south side. Basically it's princeville (north) vs poipu beach (south).

These pics were great - thanks so much for posting - brings back great memories. Last time we went there wasn't enough rainfall so even though the roads were accessible, the falls werent that impressive...

I was in Mauai just a week or so ago, and took the drive to Hana/Kipahulu. There was so much rain that the Seven Pools were closed to swimming/diving. The water was coming off the mountain in torrential waves, and if you would have fallen into the water you would have been smashed against rocks and swept out to the ocean in a heartbeat. The Wailua Falls were coming down with so much water that you couldn't get near the falls without getting drenched from the moisture in the air.

The drive down the Hana Highway will be one of the longest drives of your life. It is only about 35 miles, but you are lucky to average 10 miles an hour with the constantly winding road and narrow bridges.

That's pretty cool info Brian. Thanks! Kind of interesting to think of the islands in that way.

A co-worker of mine is getting ready to head to Maui in about 6 days. She is really excited after hearing about our trip.

And as to driving on the islands...lesson learned from Hawaii 2007: ALWAYS have a car for the FULL time you are on the island!

I couldnt' believe the difference in the Seven Pools and the Wailua Falls between this summer and last weekend. I was really looking forward to swimming/diving in the pools, but it was not to be

The pools were closed when we were there also, not sure why the weather was great.
